Rear End Swap Question
I'm sure this question has been answered before, but I just couldn't find it anywhere. I am in the process of a 67 C10, lwb build. I am going to swap out the front drums to disks, and I'm trying to decide on keeping the 6 lug bolt pattern, or going to 5 bolt, which increases my wheel choices. If I go to 5 bolt in front, I'll have to do something with the rear as well. If I decide to swap the entire rear end (which will give me some gearing and posi possibilities), which vehicles have compatible units, ie: same size, etc. I will be running a mild crate motor with a 700r4 tranny, and a 4-6 drop, if that factors into the equation at all. I am new to this, so any help is appreciated.

The wheel selection argument for 6 luggers is not valid anymore. New Chevy trucks have been 6 lug since 1999, and new Fords since '04. There are thousands of wheel choices out there now. New trucks drive the aftermarket vendors far more than the classics ever will
I have been wanting to keep mine 6 lug so i can run the 6 spoke Torq Thrust wheels -- those have a seriously cool look that makes you look twice . Auburn gear and Eaton both make posi retrofit kits for your rearend too(the sizes you can use still depends on the size of your carrier though) --- the benefit to that over a junkyard rear end is you know what you have if it is rebuilt. That way, if everything is new , it hopefully will be reliable and you wont have to worry about spitting an axle out while you are cruisin Last edited by streetstar; 09-12-2007 at 12:22 PM. |

Depending on what wheels you end up using, I ran mine 5 in the front and 6 in the rear. I have Corvette ralleys with the disc brake caps and it hides the lugs. Can't tell when the caps are on.
Best bet it to find a 71-72 rear end, it will bolt right in and is 5 lug, or just get new axles from Summit Racing. $120 each. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

I changed my 68 to 5 lug in the rear. You have a few choices if you want to change to 5 lug.
1) buy new aftermarket 5 lug axles to fit in the 67 axle housing 2) have the holes on your six lug axles welded and have a new 5 lug pattern redrilled 3) swap out an entire rear end from a 70-72 2 wheel drive half ton. 4) Use any rear end with a 3 inch axle tube and weld on new perches for the trailing arms. I did the swapping rear ends. I have a 68 and I'm putting the rear end from a 72 under it. All the dimensions are the same except the axle lengths. The 6 lug axles were longer than the 5 lug axles. Except in 69 (someone correct me if i'm wrong here). That's why you can't just swap the axles themselves out. You have to have the housing to fit the axles.

70 was the mid year chainge... not 69.
