Hello, I have this linkage on the passenger side of my Qjet that is not hooked to anything.

I have a couple of questions about it.

1.) where is it suposed to hook up?

2.) What is it supposed to do?

Has anyone got any pictures of what its supposed to look like?

It's for the choke. I think it goes in the slot right next to the end.

That rod connects the thermo-sensitive spring (in that "box" housing) to the lever that eventually moves the auto choke plate in the front section of the Q-jet. In other words, the spring movement drives the choke operation relative to ambient temperature at the spring. Unless you have some other aftermarket manual or electrically driven choke operation on this carb, the choke plate will not operate. Further, choke plate position and fast idle operation are related (by another rod) - so an effect there as well. So, if no other choke operation has been installed on this carb, place the rod through that slot in the adjacent plate and put a clip on the back side of the rod (in that groove) and you will be closer to an operational choke. There may be other issues. Others on the forum are more expert on this, so hope they chime in.

Thanks for thoise replies. I was looking at that slot and trying to figure out how the rod is retained through it.

You mentioned a clip, but there is'nt one I can see. What does one look like?

Also, since I now know it is a mechanical (thermostatic) choke, can it easily be converted to an electronic chole?

I was thinking that that upgrade might work better, If I could get it in a kit or something.

do they sell them, or should I stick with this and get a clip of some sort?

When I see something disconnnected on my pickup, the first thing I ask myself is why - PO's frequently "fix" problems by removing and disconnecting things. Don't be suprised if you get it hooked up and it doesn't work.

I had the same thing when I bought my 69 GMC.

My choke rod though is sitting the opposite way so that the loose end you show comes through and then you can put the clip on the front side.

I used a small cir clip as pictured below to hold the rod in place.

The po on my truck disconnected it and ran a manual choke cable to the carb.

The metal cover snaps off, and the first picture shows what is under it. The second picture shows the style clip that was on mine. The rod should go into the slotted hole without putting any pressure sideways on the rod after it is in place. If it binds it will not work correctly. Like northerngmc indicated you may have to remove the tin cover and reverse the rod in the spring to get it to work freely.

If you take the rod with you & stop into your friendly auto repair shop and talk to one of the mechanics they may give you a clip. Anyone who has ever done any work on carbs will usually have a few of those laying around. Worth a try anyway.....
