Re: Rod or lifter knock
Yeah, I want to fix it first before I take it out so I know it is good so I can keep it in the garage to drop in a future project. As soon as I know it is good, out it comes, and in goes the new one...

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Thanks for asking. Well, I did make a pretty good mess when I smashed my drop light last night...
I cant get the blasted lifters out... The pushrods had a pretty good layer of gunk on them and had nothing on them right where they went through the head, so I am thinking it is the same with the lifters and there is a layer of gunk on the lower portion of the lifter that is keeping them from coming through the hole. My other engine that failed was new and they just lifted out real easy... These slide up and down but stop after about 3/8" I had a little flat head screwdriver slipped up under the clip on top of the lifter and I was pulling the crap out of it and it wouldn't budge. All of them are like this... My dad told me it could be on the high side of the cam but I don't see how that would make the lifters hard to get out, but I admit my limit of knowledge at that point too, I don't want to crank the engine without more expert advice... I sprayed some carb cleaner on the side of each lifter hoping to loosen it up, but I think I'll be spraying that stuff for a week before it seeps down enough to break up the baked on oil. Any ideas?

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Mine were varnished up also on my six cyinder 68 GMC. I used a small amount of diesel oil on a spray bottle and sprayed the lifters as I was lifting them up.
When they stopped, I would grab them with a pair of pliars and moved them back and forth as I sprayed them down and slowly moved them upwards. Took me a while and it was slow going, but I got them all out. p.s. I think lighter fliud may dry the varnish out too much and make it harder to remove. Good luck. Re: Rod or lifter knock
man i bet its a lifter knocking or two..
i used to have a Pontiac 350 in a 74 lemans that i blew up. we found an old 68 SD 428 and put here in. man that car was like night and day on power. that 428 had big cahoonaas. Anyways after about 2 weeks the 428 started nicking real bad. bad enough that my dad had a mechanic listen to it and he said it was a rod. i tried to explain to the mechanic and my dad that it didn't do it all the time.. they just looked at me in disbelief and reprimanded me saying its a rod.. so being the young kid i was i decided i was going to rebuild her. i took the 428 out replaced it with a 400 and began tearing down the 428.. i found that all the rods were tight.. so i tore the engine the rest of the way down and found nothing wrong. as a kid you tend to now everything and really no nothing... well a few weeks later i had told the story to a Friend and he said he had read some were it could have been a lifter. so i went to my pile of parts and found wallah 2 lifters stuck all the way down. man was i pi$$ed. now you no when your young you have big dreams well this was one of them that never got done... |

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Thanks for the info and confirmation, I was afraid of that I really wouldn't mind so much except that I am just grudgingly doing this part. I sprayed some PB blaster on them earlier and I will hit them with more carb cleaner before I try yanking them again.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
You may have to pull the cam and push them down. Be sure you're ready to catch them with a shop rag though!!!

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Hey 2bits, I mentioned don't use lighter fluid (barbequeing today) on the previous responese but meant carb cleaner. You want them to be able to slide the lifter and if they are varnished up pretty bad, carb cleaner tends to dry the varnish. Creates more friction... That's been my experience anyway and that's why I used diesel oil. Any other solvent may work as well.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
OH OK, I getcha on the carb cleaner deal. I just got ONE of them out. No freakin way I am going to pull the cam, I'd rather pull the engine and toss it in the dumpster.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Alright! Success! Glad you at least got one out. I know they can be a b---- when covered with varnish. I think it took me a couple of hours if not more to remove all of mine.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Hey 2bits. I feel your pain as right now I am going through a continuous peck with my 97. Bought some Rislone engine treatment today to try. If nothing else it may clean up the pistontops.
It's really bothering me but I haven't flipped it off yet!

Re: Rod or lifter knock
I got sick of it and pulled the engine Saturday, pulled it in three hours! Almost finished prepping my new engine to go in, I'll drop it in Mon or Tues night depending on how tired I am after work. Just need to install the harmonic balancer and the intake, then I can drop it in and do the rest while it is in the truck. I did a pretty clean job of pulling it, I left the radiator in, and just folded the hoses back, took the Alt and PS off as one unit (they use the same bracket) and bungeed it off to the side as well as the A/C compressor and starter. I didn't have to disconnect one wire. I'm pulling the carb, fuel line and fuel pump as one complete unit to transfer to the new engine too.
The new engine is a 250, just rebuilt, bored over .30 over.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Oh yeah, I spent all this time and money on changing it over to a Six, there's no way I would put a V8 in it now! My basic idea has always been the same, I just tried to do it on the cheap because I couldn't afford a new engine. My buddy is letting me pay this engine out, so that's how I am getting into this one. It's actually gonna look exactly as it has the whole time with the past two engines. I liked that look, just needed it to run haha... Just a stock intake and a single one barrel carb. The only mod I am adding that will be different is headers, and of course ALL the accessories! Just got the intake on, time to beat the harmonic balancer on and drop it in if I can get it on all the way. No way to "install" it on these inlines, just gotta pound it on, but not "too" hard sheesh! I took some pics but you've seen them all before lol

Re: Rod or lifter knock
Ya know, I've never owned a straight 6 or V6 for that matter. But I have always liked the sound of a straight 6 with split manifold and dual glass packs out the back with a 3 speed trans. I remember old 50's Chevys running around town set up like that. I may have one some day.

Re: Rod or lifter knock
I think look cool... unusual you know, and the simplicity can't beat. I really would like to build a rat rod kind of car, and drop one of my spare engine in it, I think they look right for that period of car.
I have no love for a V-6 whatsoever hehe
