Found this book the other day and looked up our trucks (it covers '69-72) to see their quality in first few years.

Here's data for the Six;

And the Eight;

Thought it was interesting.The Six did pretty good,but the Eight had some transmission and engine complaints.

That's pretty cool, but what is the rating for the the empty, half and full dots?

Oh yeah,forgot to put that.

A Black dot is really a lot of problems reported,lower half of dot black;worse than average,blank dot;average.Bottom of dot blue=better than average and a blue dot means much fewer than average problems for that specific area,ie."engine,mechanical" or "steering",etc.

Kinda off the subject, but I hate consumer reports and their reports on vehicles. I think they're the number one reason why people continue to tought Japanese cars. Don't get me wrong the jap cars are good cars, but I think that many american cars are just as good, if not better than the jap cars. Yet consumer reports continues the stereo type japanese cars as super quality and then dog on the american cars. The other day I was looking through it and they they rated the New Tunda's "predicted reliability" as good or excellent...something like that. Then the "predicted reliability" of the new '07 chevy/gmc was "too new to tell" or something like that.

I'm sorry, but the new Tundra has a completly new engine. Yet the GM offerings essentially have the same engines as the previous body style.

This is just one example of there bias towards the Japanese cars. Just my opinion.

I hate them too. I've tried to follow their recommendations on a few things and they seem to ALWAYS get it wrong in the real world.The other thing is that they will recommend a product and when you try to buy it you find that nearly always that model was discontinued last year or something.

I HATE CR as well. Look at the Matrix vs Vibe ratings... funny as hell, you'd never know they were the same car. The Pontiac version is rated as marginal while the Toyota version is a top pick.

I don't bother to read CR anymore. Waste of time. Looking at these ratings they didn't think too highly of our trucks either. They gave the straight sixes a horrible rating yet 40 years later there are many still running.

I have a new slogan for them:

Consumer Reports, improperly rating vehicles for 40 years and proud of it

I love the newer 'Vettes, but those old ones sure weren't much to write home about. (In the way of their mechanical reliability, etc.)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way! But then what do you expect from a guy like Ralph Nadar? He started it with Unsafe at Any Speed which slammed the Corvair out of existance. Meanwhile the VW, essentially the same car, gets a pass (at least for a while). They've had anti-American bias from day one!

My future father in law was a huge CR advocate a few years ago (been with my chick for 4 years) and he's also a toyota nut (bugs the hell out of me about it) but even he finally stopped buying CR after they bought SEVERAL new (and expensive) appliances that were highly rated that failed within a year of purchase.
