are 462624 heads any good?

well, are they good for a resonable amount of horsepower? What size valves should they have?

They are very light castings known to crack around the exhaust seats. Just measure the exhaust valve. Some of these heads are used in corvettes. Most have 1.94 intakes which are adequate for most street engines, but they have big chambers and are light. I would only take them real cheap myself. You can get thicker big chamber heads. I got this info out of the "Small Block Interchange manual by David Lewis.

Ive found mortec to be full of it on most of their numbers. 624's never came in 2.02 intake valve sizes. There just plain old mid to late 70's smog castings .

If they came on a 350 or a 400 then you have 1.94 X 1.50 valves . Probably 140-155 cc ports. They'll flow as good ( or bad ) as any other mid 70's smog head. Question you have to ask yourself is how much power do you want to make and more realistically ... How much money do you have to spend. The two dont always go together . Good heads dont cost a lot any more but one mans $600 is another mans fortune.

IMHO theyre not worth rebuilding . Then again I wouldnt flinch at spending $800 on a set of new quality heads. You might. several companies offer fully rebuilt stockers for around $350 with no core charge. You might consider them if your not too hung up on making peak power.

they most likley have the 1.94/1.50 valves. i just took a set of them off my motor this past weekend in favor of some dart iron eagles. the difference isn't even explainable. i personaly wouldn't put any money into them unless you are just wanting a completely stock motor for a daily driver or work truck. if you are wanting a performance engine decent heads can be had for fairly low prices. like the s/r torquers, sportsman II's, pro lightnings or even the darts. i put a basic comp 262xe cam in the motor with those old heads and the chambers are just too big (making compresson too low) to get very good performance out of them. unless you put in a dome piston to increas compression, but then again if you are going to go far enough to put real nice pistons in it then i wouldn't waste money on a light casting head that is prone to cracking.

just my .02
