Anyone relocated their gas tanks?

I'm working on a '65 stepside pick up and I'd like to relocate the gas tank to the rear. But I'd like to have a side fill gas tank, my question is will I have to notch the frame for the filler neck or how do I accomplish this project? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Here you can see the fill over the frame. This is the tank kit from www.truckandcarshop.com . That would be the blazer set up.. Use this link to see a few pictures... http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f2...t=000_0346.jpg

$205 for the kit sounds pretty reasonable to me.

I paid $150 at the swapmeet from the truck and car shop. This was cash. They sell stufff at the swap meets for less when you pay cash..

Re: Anyone relocated their gas tanks?

I needed a tank with an efi in tank pump for my 5.3 swap. I ended up using a tank from a 87 chevy van. It turned out well. Had to trim approx 1/2 from the inside of the bottom frame rail and move the frame rail back approx 3 inches. I had to move the filler neck to the top of the tank but works great.

I just put a 21 gallon poly tank in under the bed floor a year ago . I ended up coming up through the floor with a fill neck - not the greatest location but better than cutting open the bedside .I did not need to notch anything other than 1 cross sill for the bed floor .

Do you all have picks of the finished product? I am interested in getting the tank out of the cab soon!

i like the location of your filler neck greg. that would work a whole lot better if you were hauling something.

Thanks John .
I had really wanted to do a flush mount door on the floor and conceal the cap , but the way the tank has it's inlet , I was forced to run along the underside of the oak . I didn't want to go through the bedside , so I used an old cab filler neck and made a 90 degree turn from galvanized exhaust type pipe . The gas cap you see is a horn button modified with the catch of a gas cap .
It is slow to fill , but I am usually not in a hurry when I am out with her .

Re: Anyone relocated their gas tanks?

Gregg,

Do you have any under bed pics? I like what you have done a lot.

Both of the applications look nice though.

What are the options of a flip tag or maybe hidden filler tube behind the tail-light or something. I would like to keep the filler tube out of the bed as I imagine gasoline doing bad things to the bed finish if a spillover were to happen.

Re: Anyone relocated their gas tanks?

Suburban tanks mount between the rails and drivers side exit. Replaced a 40 gallon tank from Auto Zone for my 91 Suburban for 280.00...Huh..costs almost that much to fill the S.O.B.

I will get a couple of pictures for you tomorrow .
I thought about the taillight flip idea , but there is not enough room up the channel between the box end where the taillight is mounted and the inside of the rear of the box .
If you fill it slow , there is no spillage . It also helps to have 6 coats of marine varnish on the wood.

Greg63, I'd like to see more pics of your truck - from one yellow to another. I think I like your strips in the bed, but I'd love to see your whole ride!
