Lets see some 73-87 work horses
I know that there are a lot of prissy-ed up bagged, custom painted, nice, juicy rods out there, but i really want to see some good, old fashioned, American made work horses. I want to see the trucks that dont stay spotlessly clean and ready for show. Lets see those trailer-pulling, grille guard toting, tow-packaged machines that work for a living!!!

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
Ironically, here's my truck at a show. Make no mistake though, it's my daily driver, and my only vehicle. It has the heavy half package. |

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
Here's my 74, It worked all it's life.
This is with the drop, New fenders just sitting on it along with a rust free bed I picked up. It's down to the bare frame and cab shell right now, When finished it will have a easy life as a show only truck.

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
Here's my 87 silverado. I have been driving it with mostly primer for almost 7 years. I haul lots of stuff in it and behind it. I just got it painted a couple weeks back, so it looks a little nicer, but still tackles what I throw at it. You can see my trailer some in the background of the second image. The front has 2" drop spindles and the rear has airshocks. I think that is a rather odd combo.
My Dad bought it new and used it to tug a 5th wheel around. Still have the bolt holes in the bed from that. It had trailer brakes and a CB in the cab. Took that stuff out. No longer needed. The only remnant from that duty is the trailer recepticle below the bumper in the last pic.

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
This is the truck that won me Truck Of The Month for being the nastiest looking beater on the forums. I still use it as a daily driver, 20 miles a day to work. Still use it to haul firewood (2 loads yesterday), and still use it to knock over trees for firewood that are stubbornly caught on other trees (last week). Almost 350,000 miles on the original drivetrain and it still starts up every time I turn the key.

You just cant get that kind of reliability out of a vehicle these days. Last car i saw with that many miles was my dad's old Volkswagon Fox that the odometer stopped working around 250,000 but it kept running for another ten nyears or so. He sold it... |

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
well the first one is my old 84 3/4 gmc..hauled heavy loads most of the time,,but anything i could gewt in it or behind it i took with me where ever i wanted to take it..
Hosted on Fotki the next one is my 76 crew cab dually, which i know from it past history pulled a race car trailer, other than that i know nothing about it...with me it will be a daily driver except when it snows, im not going to be hauling as much in the bed because of the lil sleeper shell on it,, but since i have no rear windows, it stays on..lol..but i will pull what ever i put behind it... Hosted on Fotki i think a truck should be used as a truck,, hopefully i never get to the point where i cant use it as a truck,,but if i do,,you can bet i will have another one to use as a truck..

She gets me to and from work on daily basis, which is an achievement by itself cause 20 of the 25 miles I commute are on a road that even tho paved can put most offroad trails to shame. She also once pulled a stalled John Deer tractor with a loaded hay-bale trailer twice the size of the truck for some 10 miles, and she did a fine job as a tow rig. She needs new valve seals tho

Re: Lets see some 73-87 work horses
It's been my recent project, haven't even used it for 'work' yet other than a few loads to the dump but it's nice having something I don't have to worry about dents or scratches! I need to change the previous owners horrible white on the roof, or atleast get it off the doors and A pillars so its more like a factory 2 tone Last edited by oldpurple; 10-16-2007 at 04:31 PM. |
