Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

Bought another truck just to get the rear wheels that I have been looking for! It has been a 2-year quest to find the exact 9.75 x 16.5 steel wheels with 4.75-in back spacing and with the hubcap clips for my '68 Longhorn restoration. It seems like everyone has thrown away a set of these wheels since NOBODY wants old wheels with hubcap clips...LOL!

I'm not really partial to GMC's but they sure seem to appear with the correct parts from time to time. This is my third '68 GMC donor!

Off to powdercoat on Monday....whooo hoooo!

My 71 had them when I got it (although mine dont have the clips) and they are definitely not for sale (neither is Rusty!) That powdercoated one looks way cool I just got an idea!

I have 4 of those minus the clips on my 71 now. Im changing to ones a tad bit narrower as soon as I save a little more money for all new tires.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

Mark, I have not forgotten about your wheels...these came up and I could not wait since they had the clips. The engine in that truck was solid as well...350 with 10k miles, 030 pistons, Comp Cams XE268, Edelbrock carb and manifold, HEI, new flex fan, double roller timing chain, and headers. It sounds really tight as well. The truck is missing the clutch and radiator (he was parting it). The rearend is a Dana 4:10 posi with slipping clutches...which is why he started to part it. It also has a cool swivel boom hoist in the bed...just not sure what I will do with it. Compression and leak down test tomorrow and I may just put the engine into my stepside...it just sounds so cool with that cam...LOL!

I did not need another diversion from the Longhorn restoration but here it is!

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

Special-K...I have passed up two sets of the 8.25 clips recently. One set of 4 was $50 with tires!!!!!!!!!!! Shipping is not that bad...about $40 is all. If you want two 8.25 clips, I will grab them the next chance I get. The most I have seen them for was $25/wheel. Now watch...the next time I see some they will be up to $50/wheel...LOL!

BTW...'68 was the last year of the clips!

I can get you hundreds of thoughts on Stockton wheels from another board. I bet maybe one percent of them were happy with Stockton, all the rest had horror stories. There are plenty off other good wheel companies out there.
This is just a heads up for my truck buddies.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

Jerry, Thanks...you have my empathy, as well...LOL! My wife just shakes her head when the tow truck comes down the driveway.

The really funny thing was that I bought this truck from the brother of a guy I just sold my '67 parts truck to not more than 6 months ago. I pulled up to look at it and there was the parts truck I had recently sold! I bought it just for the buckets...LOL! Sometimes it is a small world.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

nyncompute...I used to have special wheels welded up by Willamette Wheel for a song. They just got out of the business. I tried Stockton wheel...one wheel cost more than this ENTIRE truck!!!!!!!! And I had to send Stockton the parts...LOL!

If I had Bill Gates money...or CG's, I would probably be buying from them...but this is just WAY more fun!

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

Mark, Check the backspacing on those wheels, if you get a chance. Notice how the 2x4 wheels don't hang outside the wheel wells like your 4x4 wheels.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

I think it is the axle width but wanted to know about the back-spacing just the same. If you get the back-spacing it will prove that it is axle width.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

I would like another pair of 8.25s.I want to run earlier hubcaps and I may build an earlier 4wd.Basically,like so many other parts,I just want them because I might use them.

I have a pair of these (nub-type) that have a deeper dish. They are 9.75s and came off the back of a`72 C/30 SRW with utility bed since new.He had the 8.25s on front.I think the Duplexs that were made for rear mounting were wider offset like that. Also, they are made for trailers, too, and those wheels have about a 50/50 offset/backspace.

Stockton doesn`t do "clips" do they? There are wheel builders all over.Another big name in CA is Pete Paulsen. These guys got a name from back in the roadster days and being bay area.

The first factory tilt I scored was found in a Custom/10 truck at a used car lot.I got the truck on Friday for $700,took it home and swapped the column, then sold the truck for $800 on Sunday.Things have changed haven`t they? That truck was well worth $1,200-1,500 and they had $850 on it just to get rid of it.It still had faded original paint.I had too many or I would have kept it,too.

I`ve seen a pair of these wheels on beater trucks where the wheels are mixed up just to run the same size tire.I always wanted to go offer a pair to match the other two just to get the steelies. They`d prolly be delighted to get a pair of sawblades in exchange for the peeled, flakin`,and rusty lookin old wheels.

I bought a`72 K/10 with tow hooks,my first pair.I drove it through the winter, then sold...minus the tow hooks.I almost cancelled the sale when I couldn`t get them to break loose.I tryed desperately to keep them.I had to torch the bolts off.The frame was still hot when the buyer showed up.

My best is...I looked at a`72 K2500 GMC from WA State last winter for sale for $8,500(to compare to mine). It was decent and mostly all original with some nice options.I figured I`d check the old SPID casually and saw AM/FM on there. It had an in-dash am/fm/cassette,but an old radio was stuffed under the passenger side.I pulled it out and it was the Delco am/fm.I asked about it and the guy gave it to me.I was so broke I couldn`t buy a pack of crackers and I scored a $200 radio.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired of This?

I remember those wheels! When I was a kid we had a 72 GMC 2500 that had the Camper Special package on it. It had the 8.25s on the front, and the 9.75s on the back. Man I loved that truck! Couldn't talk my folks into giving it to me when I turned 16 unfortunately. ...Joe
