Quieter in the cab?

How can I make my truck quieter in the cab? It's not too bad in there under 40mph, cause the motors just chugging along, but around 50 or so, its pretty loud. You have to crank the radio way up to hear it, you pretty much have to yell to talk to anyone riding with you, and you can't talk on the phone cause its so loud. Its not exhaust resonance, most of the noise comes right through the firewall. The 350 itself is a loud engine, its a lot louder than the V6 was with open manifolds.

yea what he said. i got some peal an stick roofing flashing from loews that works just the same as dynamat at a 3rd of the price. it deadens the sound an keeps the temp down a bit, and some think dense carpet pad also.

And how does that make the engine noise quieter in the cab?

I agree that you should limit the calls while driving, but there are emergencies when it is needed.

I also agree that sound deadening is needed. Put it on theinside the cab against the firewall and floors. This will make a quieter ride in the truck.

Yes the sound deadener will woirk great but don't use the roofing stuff. I wanted to do this as well and was told it will not work and in the heat it will melt and make a mess. So I decided to try it out and see what happened. With a small tortch and some Dyna matt and roofing *****athene on a sheet of sheetmetal I started to heat the metal up very slowly to see what would happen. Sure enough the roofing stuff melted, shrank and made a huge mess and the Dyna matt did not even soften at teh same temp.

If you use it on the rear of the cab you might be ok as long as your truck does not stay out in the sun durring summer time temps. On the fire wall I would not use it due to the heat comming off the motor and same with the floor boards. Just my $.02 but I went with Dyna mattt and it made a huge differance.

You could turn off the engine and coast, do wonders for gas milage too
Or DynaMat and a carpet kit will do wonders like Rokcrln said. I even plan on putting it behind the gas tank.

The 350 engine is absolutely not a louder engine than the V6. You have your new headers to thank for that. With manifolds it would be a whole different story.

How does your exhaust run, if it goes all the way to the back it will be a lot quieter than if the exhaust dumps under the cab.

what my dad did to his to reduce road noise was take that roofing flashing mentioned earlier and put it in his doors. Take off the door panel and roll up the window and stick it on the outer sheet metal. It made his doors shut more solid sounding and reduced A LOT of wind noise that our trucks have.

He also found some rubberized spray stuff and sprayed his firewall down with a few coats of that. It seemed to help a lot as well. For the floor they have rolls of heat and sound insulation stuff. Also my dad used tar and placed thin sheet metal over it to deaden noise. then the heat/sound insulation, then carpet padding, then carpet. His truck is so quiet its unbelieveable

67 C-30, I'm kinda starting to think now that I should've stuck with the Ram Horns instead of headers. Would've have saved me about $150 along with cutting down on the exhaust routing hassles. I had my first overheated starter today, that was fun. My exhaust is routed out before the rear wheels, no downspouts under the truck.

Surprisingly the truck is not drafty rolling down the road, and there isn't much road noise. It just seems like all the noise from the motor comes right through the firewall, almost like there isn't even a firewall there.

So I should put some insulation on the firewall, inside the cab? What kind of stuff should I use, spray on or Dynamat like some of you guys mentioned? Would insulating my hood help at all? I really didn't want to put any carpet on the floor because it'll hold the water and rust my floorpans out. That and after awhile they stink when they get wet.

Like i said, i Rhinolined the inside of mine, and it works great for cleaning it out with a hose, easy vacuuming, and not minding it being dirty, but it really doesnt keep sound out very well. I wouls concentrate on the firewall-

under the hood: the spray stuff works great. Only problem i know of is that it starts off black and semigloss like, then eventually turns a dull gray/flat black after being exposed to the engine heat. maybe even use the roof flashing then spray over it?

Inside firewall: insulation is about the only option, unless you wanna mess with spraying in there as well.

floors: like i said, heat/sound deadening rolls work well in conjunction with tar+sheet metal. but that doesnt really leave a useable surface for your floor.

What do you have in the way of sound deadener already?
do you still have the factory firewall insulation?
do you have carpet or a rubber mat?
does it have insulation under the carpet or mat.
is the truck undercoated on the bottom of the cab.

First let me say that i think headers are the worst offender in the search for quiet. the manifolds tend to dampen the sound where headers tend to ring.
they make a high temp header wrap tape that i have seen but i think its to hold the heat in, it might help on the sound, might not.

the factory firewall insulation is there for a reason, so if its all still there look for open holes in this area like where wires or stuff enter the cab. seal em up.
from then on out, it looks like time to buy insulation, and stuff.

I`d never use ice and water shield.That`s for houses.I bet it will cause rust over the years and what a mess to ever strip when future repairs are needed.Talk about cussing the p.o!
I`ve never noticed any more loudness from running headers.There is a bit of a sound difference,but nothing to deter from using headers,that`s for sure.
I use my cell phone,chew gum,write notes,and drive with no problem.I try to remain conscience at all times while driving and make that my priority.I`ve seen people run right up on slower moving vehicles and hit their brakes at the last minute when I anticipated the pass 1/2 mile up the road.They weren`t talking on the phone and were looking straight ahead.What`s their excuse?They need to pass a head up your a** law.That`ll fix alot of things.

Jake,do you have sound deadener?What`s on the trans hump?The base trucks with mats have about nothing.The carpeted trucks had jute.Now there`s all the dynamat-type stuff.If you install that,don`t take for granted any gaps or bare spots.Get a good tight coverage.Also,any unused hole in the firewall need sealed.

It's got some sort of funky padding on the inside of the firewall in the cab, but thats it. No carpets, no hood insulation, no engine bay insulation, no tranny hump insulation, no rubber mats, no nothing.

Now I'm starting to realize why its loud....

Is there a difference between the 67-68 earplugs and the 69-72 earplugs? Are they interchangeable?

There's a hot rod contingency that believes that engines are meant to be heard and radios don't even belong in the vehicles.

Does the motorcycle philosophy of "loud pipes save lives" make it a viable concept for our trucks?? I think the idea is to make 'em loud enough for others to hear us coming. The sound of us driving away from them is a given.

I have Dynamat Xtreme in mine as well... its expensive, but you can pick up bulk rolls on ebay for a hefty discount. The stuff basically sticks to water and makes a world of difference. You can by a "door kit" for around 60 bucks, and that by far made the biggest difference (Made the doors stop rattling from the speakers, also)
