71 Pickup 8 track Player

I would like to add one of these to my truck if is was available. Does anyone have any information on what is correct and if is was even available? I have a factory AM/FM in the dash now.

Does anyone know where to look to see what was available or correct?

I have heard stories of something available as an underdash from Delco, but the only Delco ones I see that mount under the dashes have balance controls for multiple speakers. The best I can tell, our trucks came with only one speaker in the dash.

I look forward to the can of worms I open with this question.

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

Give Rod a shout he had one that was 98% correct (I think knobs are wrong)and the price is right based on the scarcity of the animal. I have one in my 71 super and have only seen four total- two of which were on this board, one was Rods and the other was just posted. As far as the speaker it has its own stand alone speaker set and GOOD LUCK coming up with all of it- All I have is the player it's self mounted under the A/c control. Thing really fills up the space. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm pretty sure they were dealer installed only, but if rod says I'm wrong... I'll take his word for it.

I think you`re right Andy.But,if Rod says different...we can vote.Two against one,we`re right.I haven`t seen an accy book lately,but believe it`s in there.It`s not listed as an option in`71.

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

They were a dealer installed option they did not come from the factory with them, like tissue dispensers they were part of the accessory line, did not mean to sound like they came from factory installed....

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

71 Super, can you get a pic of how your's is mounted?? I have one similar that came out of an old impala or something, it's the one with the bowtie. I was wondering what the bracket looks like. I may just put it in there when I redo the truck for looks, and that vintage look. Thanks Trevor

I have thought about putting an 8 truck in my '71 and use old drive-in movie speakers on the doors. Like a lot of my ideas only time will tell how things turn out.

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

I had that 8 track on the parts board for 2 years now and no takers. It was to the top tonight once again. It has Buick knobs up front but there rear ones are correct Mind you there are some cheaper 8 tracks that are not really sought after that you could buy off ebay for the correct knobs.

Seen 8 tracks that have id's that say they are 1969 so there available that early at least. Dealer option. They used 2 speakers and have their own amp so they are seperate from the radio installation. 8 tracks mount under the dash. The wiring is different than the car versions. Different plugs and such.

I have more than one factory 8 track, so I have done comparisons.

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

I'm almost finished restoring the looks of mine, and thought I'd ask my questions in this old thread. Does anyone have any pics of where the bracket mounts to the dash? I've seen a couple of different brackets. I'm not sure if mine is correct, but it does appear to be made for it. What's the ear on top for? Also, I want to test it; Do I need any special speakers?
I found that spray can bedliner duplicates the textured coating pretty well.

board member 53'gmc has a 67 3/4 fleet that was converted to a towtruck, and it has a 8 track in the normal radio spot on the dash, there is no spid so i really have no idea, but its a stock gm 8track am/fm radio and iv always thought it to be original

I saw an 8-track in a very thorough resto one time and it was in the exact same spot as the one in the picture in Rod's post.

Re: 71 Pickup 8 track Player

72 skytop- I've heard that they mounted in the vent holes above the kickpanels.
It's one of those rare options that very few people have any info on. Here is another pic that I found in my stash that shows another style bracket.

Can you count the options?
