Jeff,

If i were you i'd get the yellow pg's out and call some local speed shop's and see if they have them!

I ck the link's 79big10 put up but summit shows they have them but they are listed as temp. unavailable Huh

And Jegs shows they carry them but they list for 4.95$ + s&h that means your gonna pay like 10 bux for some shim's.

Think about it bro that's insane

If they are just shims get some shim stock and make them. Shim stock comes in a variety of thickness. If you need them asap or as a temp fix till you get replacements.

Ok, so I gotta ask, what the heck do you need to shim the distributor for? I've never heard of this practice. Is there a significant benifit to doing it? Obviously its important if summit see's a need to stock them.

I believe the spec from GM is 30k.....you can buy the shims from GM. Make sure you check the side play between the shaft and the housing.....the housing usually looses with age.

Shims are used to locate the distributor drive gear as near to center in the cam's gear to reduce wear on the gears and prevent binding of the gears most stock engines dont need them and the only time you may need to use them is after a manifold or cam change.

I'll agree on the first half of that comment...but the second...haven't pulled a large cap or small cap HEI yet without it having shims on it....i'll check the manual on the 30K....the 30K is for the first half of your post.

How do you check to see if you need to use shims? Would you need them if the engine has high mileage to compensate for wear? If I replace my cam in a 305, would I need to shim it?

well the reason i am shimming mine is because the center plate on my distributor lifts about 1/8 -1/4 after the advance weights are maxed in turn giving me waaaay to much advance at WOT
