Pass exhaust throgh frame???

ok, wondering about passin exhaust through the frame kinda like below, wondering what reinforcing to do? I fixured bx in around it, put pipein for the exhause to go through, and maybe some gussets, wondering in the if the bars running to the trailing arm crossmember are to supportit more? looks like te frame is boxed a lot too. any Ideas on strength for me?

I saw that on that particular truck and liked it, but that was a lot of work. I believe the easiest way is to cut holes in your frame crossmembers and feed it within your rails. You can see in mine I used two 4" pieces of steel pipe that was cut 1/2" thick. We then cut out the crossmember and welded them in. Early Classics has more info on how they did this and Slammed67 did this to his truck.

You can do it like that if you box the frame to reinforce it, or you could notch the frame just like a c-notch and enforce that. Same but different. LOL

i agree, if i had a truck like slammed or 71 i would b/c it rides so low, like slammed witht he air bags, but if it was my truck (daily driver) i dont think it is worth the bother

Yup, those lowered trucks can cause a guy a lot of work! I have notched my trans crossmember, & built a crossmember for the center carrier(also notched). the exhaust is below the rails, but not more that 2". It works out good with a 3/5 drop & could go a little more without problems. The bodydrop was a chunk of work, but it gets the truck a little lower, & keeps the suspension pcs off the pavement.......it might be worth a thought

I wouln't mind more info on a body drop, I don't know anythign about them so I haven't thought of them.. pics and discriptions woud help..

mine was a very minor drop @ 1 1/2".....alot of guys go about 3". The frame horns were cut off ahead of the steer box, dropped & welded back on and boxed. Then the cab mount brackets were removed from the frame & dropped 1 1/2". the cab had a strip cut out from the toe boards to under the seat area(for the rails to stick up through), & a 16 guage 3 sided box was welded back in for clearance. a little padding under the carpet will cover the step in the floor. If you go much more than that 1 1/2", you would be better off cutting the complete center out of the floor & raising tunnel & all. On the box, I cut the lip of the box sides 1 1/2" up, & welded it back on. then finally out back, I used dropdown brackets to get the bumper at the proper height. I dont have any pics of the job, but i think there are a couple guys on the board that do. good luck....crazyL

I did this just last week, but I went throuh the frame rail right behind of the trans crossmember . I bought some 4" .125 wall tubing, cut it at 45 degrees and made some boxing plates out of 1/8" steel plate. I made sure to make the boxing plates long enough to cover the hole in the frame and the boxing plate since the tube passes through the frame at a 45 so the holes are staggered. All together it was really easy but I welded the tubes to the boxing plates first and Id recommend welding it all togther at the same time. Also had to tweak some lines and remove the tailight wiring harness while I cut and welded. Its looks awesome and on a low truck is the way to go.
