New carb, needs tuning on BIG BLOCK

New edelbrock 1407; stock otherwise. running a little rich, bogs down and backfires if you put your foot into it too much. You can ease your foot into it and get the secondaries to open up and it will thrust forward. is this just the air/fuel ratio that needs tuning?

Any hints?
