I bought a 350 HO Deluxe crate motor
I'm finally working on my truck after a long 9 years of it sitting after I stripped it down to the bare cab. I just picked up a 350 HO Deluxe crate motor last night, & can't wait to put it in.
I have a 4 speed trans that I bought 10 yrs ago from a guy that said its a Muncie, but from pics I've seen I'm not sure. Anyway some friends of mine are telling me that this new engine is too much for the 4 speed trans. Could they be right? Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated. I'm also ordering parts for converting to disc brakes from McGaughy's. Anybody had any experience with them? It's great to have a board like this to go to. Thanks

Do you have any pics of the trans? I went through trying to identify a couple of 4 speeds a few months ago. I don't think that your new 350 will be to much for the tranny. Maybe the clutch, but not the tranny.

I have pics, but no way to scan them. I think I will go out tonight & buy a digital camera. I sure would like to know about my trans before I install it.

just let me know when you do, I got lots of info on these, First off is the tranny aluminum cased?

No, its not aluminum cased. I'm going to get a camera tomorrow, & will post pics.

Also, this is the bellhousing that came with the trans. Can somebody tell me what what year/model starter I can use, as the mount is different on my 70. Thanks.

weve got a muncie 4 gear in our 66 chevyII,
its got a pretty radical small block,and a 513 geared posi, the only thing that ever broke was the bolts that hold the shifter to the tranny.

The one in the foreground is a Saginaw, and the one in the background is a Muncie. Generally the Muncie's are stronger than the Saginaw's but you shouldn't have any trouble with your motor.

yes, the front pic is a saginaw 4spd. The back pic is a little far away, but looks to be a muncie 3spd. the saginaw trannys had a 7 bolt side cover, they are a medium duty trans& will handle some pretty "spirited" driving. By no means are they as stout as a muncie or borgwarner 4 spd, but you shouldnt have any trouble unless you are drag racing the truck. as far as starter, you can run the old truck bell/starter setup(you will need a 168tooth flywheel for the late style crank). on the truck bell, if 68 up the center hole is larger than the car/earlier truck. You can use the front bearing retainer from the saginaw 3spd to properly pilot (center ) the trans in the bell. Good luck.....crazyL
