Re: Is There A Difference In Power Steering Gearbox 71 Gmc Vs. 68 Chevy?

my 68 had the old style power steering that uses an assist cylinder mounted on the drag link. I had to "heat & beat" a bump in the frame rail to make clearance for the later model power steering steering box, & replace the drag link. Other than that, its a bolt on.

Some of the 68's had the old style ps setup and many had the all in one box power steering unit like the one you would like to put in.
Some would say you can shim the box out with washers. best bet is to get the plate kit to mount it if your wanting to do the swap and the frame doesn't have the indent in it already.

Red,
no you don't have to change the drag link- the pitman arm should bolt into the draglink and wedge into it like the original one did.
The shim kit is available from Classic Parts of America for Appx. $59.95. p/n 76-979 looks like it comes with the bolts. You will only need if the frame doesn't have the indent in it. Also you should note the part is listed as for the 60-66 but works equally as well for the 67-early 68's!

shade67 said it right, if your current drag link is a manual, you wont have to change it. I thought about using the shim kit for the box, but I wanted to keep the alignment between the colum & box as close to straight as possible so I chose to create the indent in the frame (& saved the $60.00). Yours might already have the indent.
