arent these the 2 1/2 ton rockwell axles ?? 90 bucks per lot iis WAY cheap if that is what they are... hopefully Im not the only one that gets exited about this kind of stuff..

I bet they don't stay cheap. Boyce equipment is a known stalker on that site buying up any military vehicle stuff they can. K30's to kaisers to 2 1/2 tons and 5 tons.
Personally I'm getting tired of everybody stuffing 2 1/2 ton rockwells under everything and putting 46-52" tires on them. Take a look at most of the entry's to this years top truck challenge all but two were on rockies. Plus a couple of them had some very, very questionable fab work going on. The kind to make the old scary steering page proud. Don't get me wrong, rockwells have thier place. But it's a never ending cycle of bigger, bigger, bigger. Do we really need 52" xml's to go on a mountain trail ride? It's these guys with I'm bigger mentalities tearing up the trails making once passable trails impassible if your running a now small 35" tire. I'm betting that's a big reason I couldn't get up out of that creek on the grizzly lake trail, when only a couple years back DirtyLarry made it in his with similar size tires. What happend to driver skill? Sorry about the rant on rockwells.

I am a fan of hardcore heavy duty wheelers but everything has its place
getting tired of breaking parts has something to do with bigger and stronger also.. . Boyce equipment seems to also like to over freakin OVER charge for there parts also. they sell D60s for as much as a custom builder would charge for something well built with a purpose not just rebuilt and painted.. I can find decent D60s used in need a a rebuild for 800-1000 they sell em rebuilt for over 3200! It doesn't take 2000+ to rebuild back to stock then charge more for the ring and pinion.. I could rant for days on places like boyce taking advantage of a good thing and then overpricing things

So what your saying is I shouldnt put 49 in Iroks on my burb. I wouldnt Boyce they are way over priced.

I would go all the way up to the 54" bogger. why mess around with 5" in that size range..
if some is good more is better too much ought to be enough........

Like I said, rockies got thier place. I'm by means the ruler of all on that, but there are guys running around these colorado mountain trails in tube buggies with 42-52" tires, some with rockies some with d60's but it's way overkill for all but the most extreme rock crawling trails.
It's certainly something else all together to go bogging with giant tires and have a need for rockies to keep breakage at bay. For the kind of wheeling I do, they are overkill. Plus the extra height from the tires and lift required (in a truck, not a tube buggy)to clear rockies is a big negative, not to mention the wide width. I wouldn't want to be on a high mountain shelf trail on rockies since they were barely wide enough for our stock axled trucks. Ditto on boyce. Masters at cornering the market on mil-spec trucks and then jacking the price.

Im just kiding I dont thing I would go over a 40in tire I had 36 then went to 38 and now Im thinking of going to 37 hummer tires there so cheap even though there not as wide as I like I think I may go with them. Rocks are good axles if your in deep mud holes. I rember when 33 and 35 would beok on any trail but now the ruts are so deep 35 dont cut it any more.

The other day I had to rescue an overturned fence post pounder that was being pulled by a one ton dually. I first tried to rescue it with my 4"lifted /33" Chevy. No way I could get on that side hill with my truck without rolling over. That and my carb was flooding. Haha Had to go home and get the wifes stock Jeep TJ to do the job.
Im all for big drivetrain. I converted my half ton to one ton. But I regret lifting the truck as much as I did {example 4" in the front and 5.5" in the back. Kind of a curse to get in and out of the truck. Most of the ranch trails around here have you driveing sideways on the hills. I cant pull a 5th wheel trailer anymore. Catch more wind on the highway. I see lots of heavily modified trucks in town that would be useless on the trails that I drive. To high/ to tippy and just plain old way to big. Last edited by Roper; 11-25-2007 at 03:40 PM. |

Totally true. Thats why mine wont go over the 4" lift amount it has now. If I ever plan on running a larger tire than 35's, I'll gain room with the sawzall rather than more lift.

I figure my burb is so bigg it doesnt matter any way. so Its going to be a big lift but the buggie I will be towing behind it will get up and down the trails just fine. I have to much in to the burb to be denting in panls so Im going to build a buggie for the trailes some thing that I dont care about geting body damage.
