BFG M/T vs MT Baja ATZ Radial
I am looking at these two tires in a 33" size for my 71 Blazer.
Most of my driving will be highway, but also go to the snow alot. How do these tires compare against each other? Thanks. |

Generally speaking, a M/T tire on packed snow will be worse than an A/T style tire.
With big lugs and high void ratio there are less biting edges on the tread to get traction on packed/slick pavement. A/T's on the other hand have more lugs, less void ratio and therefor, more biting edges. Meaning better traction on packed snow or slick roads. Even still, if your running into lots of deep white stuff, a M/T tire is better. The snow can clean out of the M/T easier so you can tear through the powder. Where as an A/T tire will clog up with snow and can become one big white slick. That being said, I still run M/T's and if I end up on packed snow roads I make sure I'm in 4hi. Otherwise, the lack of traction makes the rear end want to pass the front with even light foot input. I just take it easy in 4HI and putt down the road. As a Matter of fact I was one of the only people in my family driving around Denver after the Blizzard last year. Thank goodness I had the M/T's because 2-3 feet of snow brings the suck for getting anywhere.

I`ve never run the newer M/Ts.How did you narrow it down to these two?Did you consider all treads out there?I`m just curious how it came down to comparing a mud terrain from one company to an all terrain by another company.4wd magazines do tests/comparisons from time to time,but are week on snow testing.As a rule I`d say for daily driving in hiway winter conditions a traditional all terrain tread is best.Off road deeper snow is like most other off road driving where "lugged" treads give the advantage to forge ahead when rolling resistance is high.Narrow is better than wide.

I would not recomend the BFG's for highway use. I've had them on a couple different trucks. One I switched to Super Swamper SSR's ( highly recomend ) and my current truck I switched to MT Baja MTZ's. Both of these were much quieter. My current MTZ's are even 3" wider and still make less noise. I can't speak for the ATZ's, but would guess they'd be even quieter.

I am running the MTZ's and so far on the highway they are great. Havent had any bad weather yet so don't know how they do in snow.

The ATZs come in 2 different (yest similiar) tread patterns depending on the size you choose.
ATZ Radial Plus is available is most of the smaller sizes The ATZ Radial is available is mostly larger/wider sizes... I like the ATZ too but I like the large lugged version but its not offered in the size I want... I have been contemplating a set of Truxxus or the Hercules Trail digger M/T.
