Carb help

I put a new Edelbrock 650 on my otherwise stock, except for intake and HEI, 350. It runs great for a few days, starts right up and and idles nice, but then it blows black soot out the tailpipes and wont't idle. It stinks up my garage and burns my eyes. Smells like a warn cam but the engine is a brand new crate from GM. I adjusted the A/F screws, but can't get it right. In fact, when I take them all the way down the truck still runs rich. I even took out the A/F screws and blew out the carb.

I have replaced two of these bad boys and have now ordered a Hooley. Any suggestions? Could the distributor be off a tooth or timing chain?

Re: Carb help

Suspect the carb. Not sure what the problem would be since I'm not familiar with Edelbrocks, but Black soot and burning eyes all sound like overly rich gas mixture. And it could be caused by sticking needle valve/float...

Re: Carb help

is your choke all the way open. if its part way closed it may be causing it to run rich?

Re: Carb help

That is the very reason I don't like Edelbrocks and why I won't buy anymore of them. I have a Holley Street Avenger 570 on my engine. It runs great. I've never had any problems with it like I had with two Edelburps

Re: Carb help

Mechanical fuel pump.

Just put on the "hooley" 80457S carb today. It farted a few times but started right up. Scared the dog and cats. Still black smoke but I haven't tuned it yet cuz the wife said I was waking up the neighbors.

Can anyone tell me what's a good fast idle and idle rpm and vacumn setting? How about fuel line? Can I buy a kit or should I just make them myself? Where's a good place to buy tube? Will brake line tube work?

Sorry for too many questions but I want to bring the truck over to the Christmas Eve family get together to show the boys. They all have new trucks!
