14 bolt axle drake drums

Is there a trick to getting the brake drums off a 14 bolt axle ? I've been trying all morning and nothing seems to be moving. Thanks.

Did you take the axle out already? What steps have you done so far?

Those are inboard style drums. You have to unbolt the axle shafts, remove the bearing retainer nut(s), and then pull the whole drum/hub off as an assembly. Then the drum can be removed by knocking out all the lug bolts and knocking the hub out the drum. Hope that helps.

Re: 14 bolt axle drake drums

Thanks for the replies. The axle is on the truck. I'm just trying to replace the parking brake cables. 60-66, that is what I needed to know.

You are very welcome. And I think that's what Clyde78 was asking, if you had taken the axle shaft out yet.

Unbolt the center axle section, undo the nut retaining tab, unscrew the bearing retainer nut, back-off the shoes and pull the drum/hub. Shoes and wheel cylinder are right there. Also drain the rear lube and have some rags handy or you will be replacing the shoes too. These bearings are wet so check the seals after the tear down. Good luck

Re: 14 bolt axle drake drums

I was just reading up on this in the Chassis Service Manual for my '69 C-20.
Sounds like a PITA just to do the rear brakes. The manual recommends changing out the oil seal on the hub whenever you remove the hub. Good luck with it and let us know how it went...

Next question. The spindle bearing retainer nut has 6 half round indentations for the prongs of the socket. Can anyone point me in the direction of the socket that I need ?

NAPA or whatever has a selection of specialty sockets. I thank those run around $15
It will be labeled as a spindle nut socket or somesuch. Somone in the store will know what you are asking for.

Re: 14 bolt axle drake drums

If the threads havn,t been buggered up you don't need the socket. Ive done hundreds of them & have the socket but never use it. There is a tab bent into one of the notches. Bend it out & take a punch with about 1/8" flat end. Put the punch in one of the notches & tap it with a hammer to loosen it. Then spin the nut out with the punch. Remove the spider & do the same with the inner nut. Catch the thrust washer so you won,t lose it & slide the drum off. The later models have a thin lock ring & a key that goes in the axle groove with one nut, instead of the 2 nut type previously described. I hope this helpes.
