Almost walking !!
Well I decided that it was time to dump the old Rockwell T-case and install the ready to go 205 setup. After taking out the case I was shocked to see the out putshaft had twisted and broke. I don't know how it did'nt snap off and leave me walking. After I took the pics I looked at the input shaft and it was twisted and cracked also! I have messed with a lot of trannys and never seen one like this. LAst year I installed a stout well built 454 with front and rear lockers and have been having fun with it. I even took 4th place in a burnout contest with 23 cars. I was the only 4x4 in the bunch. The crowd loved it. I was expecting the coupler to let loose, but not the tranny shafts.
Anyone know if I can get stronger than stock shafts for the 465? Would going to an auto be better? I would rather keep the standard. I know an auto would help ease the hard shock on the drive line when I stomp on it. I also wonder if ya'll think new shafts would hold up OK considering the old shafts have been twisted on for almost 40 years. Any thoughts, Ideas? Thanks

Re: Almost walking !!
I may not have made it clear, the twisted shafts are on the sm465 tranny not the t-case.

Re: Almost walking !!
Damn. That is nuts. You are lucky
I would have thought the coupler would break before damaging the out put shaft too.

Re: Almost walking !!
what about changing it to the newer 32? spline shaft? like np208/sm465s come with. i think you can get input gears for a 205 t-case to match

Re: Almost walking !!
Well, I was wondering about a late model tranny. The smoth quiet shifting would be nice. Last summer when I put the T-case together, getting ready for the swap, I got the 205 465 adapter and seals. I also had to install the correct input shaft on the 205 for my 465 (I got the 205 from a 350 tranny). So I hate to start swapping everything around again. $$$.
One clue to all. Don't sell your old parts on E-BAY untill the project is done.

Re: Almost walking !!
Wow. That's pretty impressive. I'm with Larry, I would have thought the coupler would have grenaded before twisting the output.
I'm sure it took a bunch of input torque from the engine and some good traction to twist that shaft. I'm thinking a high rpm clutch dump with little to no slippage at the tires. I'm not sure a nv4500 would hold up to that stress either.

Re: Almost walking !!
Thats absolutely crazy never seen it before. I would think a stoutly built sm465 should be able to handle all of that with no problems but not sure. That just don't make sense about what happened though.

Re: Almost walking !!
Mine was messed up too, but not as good as yours.
THe 10 spline design is just crappy, there is no way around it. To go to the 32 spline setup you need the longer mainshaft, the hard to find 32 spline np205 adapter, and then a round pattern 205 with the long input gear.

Re: Almost walking !!
Go to www.profabmachineinc.com We have used their 465 three speed kits for pulling trucks. I'm sure they could set you up. You will not brake these shafts

Well, brother I have looked at the photos and can not believe they did not snap off. Better hang them up on the wall of honor you should be starting. Your brother with the hot rod 74 Chevy.
