problem child: living up to its name once again

ok so i just put my carter afb carb on it today after robbing the edelbrock from it about a month ago for trouble shooting and just never swapped them back and decided to install the carter on problem child instead. so after getting it installed and her up she idled rather high. on thing that i noticed is that she would not run with the choke any further open than just a crack. so what could be my problem?? too rich?? too lean?? timing?? if you guys need the number thats on the carb let me know and i will get it. not sure of the cfms

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

Well if it will only run with the choke, it's rich... which means more fuel less air. If you open up the choke and the truck dies then the air fuel mixture leans out and you get to much air.. It almost sounds like you have a air leak, maybe a base gasket or soemthing, sounds like it's sucking air... leaning out and stalling..

I'm no pro, just my experience...

Check for any open vaccum ports or your intake gaskets and carb to manifold gasket. If you can get it to idle, spray carb clean around all the sealing areas and listen for rpm change. Thats a start. Good luck!

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

i just remembered that i have a carb bolt hole on the intake that is stripped/stripping. when i try to tighten the nut on the stud, the stud just pulls out. so what i think that i am going to do is jb weld the stud in the manifold

JB Weld? Are you the guy who fixed my turn signal switch?

Im having the same carb issue as you.....firing up my truck after sitting and using an unknown carb. I figured out that my filter was clogged and my carb was full of gunk. I used carb cleaner to blow out every passage and it ran better.......I pulled it today and cleaned it out totally but havent fired it up yet. Good luck!

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

Any luck with your truck/carb issues? I fired mine today and could not get it to idle correctly. Im using an Edelbrock 1400.......600cfm with EGR. Im checking the fuel bowls tomorrow and may need jets and metering rods. Not sure.

My neck is sore from gesturing; can I get my $ back please!

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

Hey 60........I got my truk running and these symptoms are vacuum leaks...make sure your gaskets are good on bottom and everything is plugged. I found my carb was screwed.....used a different one and it fired up and ran no problem.

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

hey pro, what carb did you replace your 1400 with?? personally i wouldn't have used the 1400 cause of the egr bull isht. i think that my whole problem right now is the fact that one of my bolts holes for the carb studs is so stripped out that when i go to tighten the carb that it actually is getting pulled out of the manifold. and i have only a couple options besides replacing the intake. one it to tap the hole out for a bigger screw/stud, the other is tap the hole out bigger and run a helicoil in it, or jb weld the thing in there. so right now i think i am going to go with the jb weld option for the time being. if i change out the intake, its going to be for an edelbrock performer rpm airgap manifold. same range as what i am running right now, just added cooling to the carb and fuel.

Smile Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

The 1400 was a freebe so I tried it. I think the EGR is the problem but Im not sure. Im not an expert on these problems. I know an x-GM mechanic who now restores truks. He said if its a lean problem to take out the metering rods! I did and it didnt help......stalled as soon as it got warm. Its something to try.
I replaced the carb w/ a new 500 edelbrock that I had. It fired up and ran with a couple adjustments.

I am currently running the Performer Air Gap...mite be able to see it in thse pics..........I will be changing to an Edelbrock dual quad and Comp Cam. Thats why I had the 500.

Keep trying, Jeff

Re: problem child: living up to its name once again

Im keeping the Air Gap to transplant on to the 'burb eventually. I see intakes on Craigslist constantly for 1/2 of new........check out your local area and see whats floatin' around.
