Anyone have a problem in third gear -

on your SM465, having the shifter hitting the dash? I've bent it down once, but it still hits when I shift into third. I'm thinking I'll have to bend it even further, and then put another bend upwards, so it'll shift a little easier. It doesn't seem like it should be hitting the dash. Anyone else run across this?

ttt I might mention that it was a three speed, and it's a '67 with an sm465 out of a '72.

Is the engine and trans mounted to far forward? It should still clear. Maybe wrong shift lever? Here's a pic of my shifter.

Re: Anyone have a problem in third gear -

Seems to be a stock shifter, and the tranny's pretty tight. It doesn't hit hard, but it hits - I'll probably just put another bend in it.

Re: Anyone have a problem in third gear -

Just a thought and I really don't know but is there a difference between the 6 cyl and V8 shifters?I'm thinking the bends may be different since the 6 mounts differently then the V8.It may mean the shifter is an inch or two different causing the problem.Of course that's also assuming you used a tranny from the other style motor.Hope this made sense.

Re: Anyone have a problem in third gear -

Yeah, it does. I just noticed Ohio Dan's shifter has two bends in it - mine only has the one near the bottom. Maybe that's the porblem - just tweak the bottom bend a little more, and put a top bend in it. I just don't understand why it only had the one bend. I'm not sure that the tranny came out of a V8, but the hump is for a V8, and the shifter is centered in the hump. In the sixes, the hole is further back. Maybe that is the problem - the tranny was from a six, and the hole being further back never had a problem with hitting the dash with the shifter.
