Question 1970 Tilt Steering Column-what color? Black?

Ok...I think I read this on a past thread but either I'm slow in picking the right thread or I have been dreaming...but...I believe I read that the correct color on tilt wheels are black...and not color keyed to the interior color. Is this right? I want to be sure I get he column painted the right color. Thanks in advanced.

Yep, they made it easy...all tilts came from the factory black.

Re: 1970 Tilt Steering Column-what color? Black?

I don't know guys. Check out the pics taken from a 1970 dealer mailer I've got. Also, I pulled a column out of an early '71 Sierra Grande that was blue. I inspected it close from top to bottom and am 99% sure it had not been repainted. But that is the only one I've seen that was body color. I have owned about 10 of these columns and they were all black. Maybe it was a late 70-early 71 thing to paint them body color???

I wouldn`t go by promotional material, but I wonder about that blue column you saw.The tilt was introduced in`69.So,if anything I`d think the exception would be in that transitional time.
You`re definately safe going with the matte black column and black wheel to be "correct".I have a restored column that I painted saddle because it looks better,IMHO.

Re: 1970 Tilt Steering Column-what color? Black?

So on the steering column paint thing, why do you find some of them painted a darker shade than the interior color?
Sorta the next shade or two darker than the body/interior color is.
Did they paint the top of the dash area under the windshield and the columns a different color from the factory?

Is that correct?
Or should it all be the same body color?

Another question...are you saying that the steering wheels were also black and not colored keyed? To make my interior factory correct the steering wheel and column should be black?

Yes.The column always matches the wheel(or,visa-versa).

Thanks for the info. I did not realize that all tilt wheels were black to match the steering column on 70 trucks. I am always learning something new about our trucks. Thanks Again.
