General Information on TBI in Later 80's Trucks

Thanks for answering the questions that I've asked so far. I'm new to these trucks, so what's old hat to you is new to me.

My next question is a general one about the TBI found on later 80's trucks.

Is it any good? What type on injection is it? Is it an "electronic" QJet or is it more modern like the units found on early-90's trucks? Do they provide better mileage and driveability? Does anyone have pictures?

Thanks,
Ed

I have had very good results with mine... no major problems. The last time I checked mileage i was getting around 17mpg... it will also depend on your running gear; and mine is a 350. I believe they installed the TBI between 87-95'... pic is attached, but kinda dark.

The TBI on the 87-91 versions on our bodystyle are the same as what is on a 88-95 trucks. Improved cold cranking, better mileage, better drivability. It is one year only in 1/2tons, 1987, and yes, it is electronic.

I'm pretty sure I've seen '86 and maybe '85 trucks that claim to have EFI. Is this the same setup or something different?

Thanks,
Ed

Those are not EFI. Some of them have EST, which is Electronic Spark Control, and many have computer assisted carbs (CCC carbs), but they are not true fuel injection like the 87s are

Re: General Information on TBI in Later 80's Trucks

There are some LATE year 86 trucks that will have the TBI, but in general, 1987 was the year model that went to TBI.

Mine has the 305, our last trip yeilded 22.5mpg @65.
I checked the city/highway (60/40) mileage and I normally get between 15.5 - 17 depending on how I drive.

Re: General Information on TBI in Later 80's Trucks

I' m getting 17-18MPG at 65 in my retrofitted '75. Better performance overall. Cold-hot starts are nothing but a ancient memory.
