brake hose problems

I posted about this earlier but, I really thought it'd be best if I started a thread focused on this..

I got some hoses form ECE.. and ECE swears these are the right ones (front brake hoses for 71 C10)

here are the 2 hoses.. obviously the ugly one is what came on the truck when I got it.. these fit in the hole no prob, the new one.. is the same shape, as noted.. but is larger on the end and WILL NOT fit in that hole no matter how much wiggling or anything I try.. the hole is simply too small, by a good bit.. enough to make me sure its ont the paint making it too large.

Now that you mention it, when I bought my brake kit, I had the same problem that you are describing. The instructions said to cut that tab off and drill a hole in the crossmember and put a little bracket on in place of the piece that was cut off. The hoses themselves probably don't come with that bracket. If I were you and were just replacing the hoses, I would not want to cut that thing off. I would go to the local parts store and get one. Before you do, just make sure it is the same size as the old one. My kit was for converting to disk from the original drums. Good luck.

my thoughts exactly.. I'm not cutting this tab off cos 1 hose doesn't fit when I could easily get a replacement.

given it may be a better hose.. but I'd rather have something that fits heh

these are supposed to be raybestos hoses.. they're from ECE

Did you send those pics to ECE? They have a great reputation for their quality and service. I'm sure they'd help you get your problem solved.

I haven't sent the pics to them yet, but I talked to stan yesterday and he said "I know what I sent you, those will fit, there may be some dirt or something in that hole, they are machined to fit and they are the same shape"

maybe thats not verbatim but its very close..

when they sent me my drum brakes they sent me the wrong ones twice heh, so I dont doubt the possibility that these are wrong also.

I found the same thing when I swapped to a 71 front end. A small half-round file did the trick nicely. Widen the hole on the clamp until the hose end fits. My motto is...if it don't fit, ya make it fit!

Did your new ones have a part number and manufacture on it? Those look like the ones I need for mine. I used 1978 front lines that are to long, but have the same end setup you pictured.

You have a 73 up hose, look at the "banjo" that fastens to the caliper. The 71-72 had the square banjo, & after that, they went to the small round banjo. If the lenght is about right, & the line fits, I would file the hole & run it.......any replacement caliper will pretty much fit the later style banjo.....crazyL

somehow I knew it...

when I ordered my brake drums from ECE.. the 1st set that came in didn't match.. so I sent them back.. the 2nd set were for a 73-87.. why do they keep mistaking my truck for another one?

Because it is so clean and shiney!! Looks great. I think ECE gets their brake lines from In line tube. Andy (at ECE) told me that one day on the phone.

I called in line to order mine today and because of this post I verified that the front hoses would be correct.

Dark fox, I went through the same fun at napa many yrs ago! I had a 71 with a stuck caliper, & the replacement was for 73 up, & the guy new what the problem was......but couldnt get the old caliper. I had to replace the brake hose to get it to work. They only went 2 yrs on the caliper, then changed! The later caliper bolts right on to the 71-72 spindle......but takes a different brake hose, & is more common. that is why I suggest using it,as if you ever have to replace the caliper......chances are that you will get the later style, & that square banjo wont fit it...crazyL

thd square end is not the problem.. the round one will work on the caliper.. the problem is the other end.. the line end..

I just got off the phone with stan, turns out these hoses are for 73-87, and tihs was done because it was assumed that I was doing an upgrade kit from a standard drum/drum truck with aftermarket lines.. I'm not.. this is a true disc brake truck with true disc lines.. as a result the driver side hose thread is larger than the passenger side.. soooo... the hoses are on the way

Dark fox, I do understand that the problem is not the end on the caliper, but the end that hooks to the chassis. What I was trying to say was ,that if you have to replace the caliper at 1 point (sometime down the road), you may have problems finding the 71-72 unit, & if you have the square banjo it wont fit the 73 up caliper.......& you will replace both caliper & hose to make it go(ouch).......just something to thik about. good luck, crazyL Oops, I see after reading again, that you have problems with thread size on the lines....that dont work!
