Re: PTO Operation..............

It is mechanical as far as I can tell.

To engage the one on my 77 GMC dump truck's pto I push in the clutch and then pull the knob out to engage the pto and then I let off the clutch.

I am sure that the cable that engages the pto is adjustable.

Hopefully someone else will be able to add more information.

Re: PTO Operation..............

When you try to engage it does it grind or make any other noises? what does the pto hook to? is it a shaft or a pump? Is the cable moving far enough to engage it? you can have several possible problems. it can have striped out splines or key way on the driven shaft. if it is a new install it could be the wrong gear on the pto. If that is the case then the teeth are probably far enough off it can't be engaged. Or if you are lucky the cable is just adjusted wrong and it can't throw the pto far enough to make it work.

Re: PTO Operation..............

On my PTO winch you have to put the transmission in neutral and the transfer case in neutral. Keeping the clutch depressed engage the pto then put the transmission in gear leaving the transfer case in neutral. It works just the winch. Depending on what gear the transmission is in as to how fast the winch will turn...along with speeding the motor increasing rpm. Hope some of this helps. I have stickers on my dash telling about the pto operations and I will photograph it for you if you need. Randy

Re: PTO Operation..............

Thanks to all for the Replies, No Grind, or any kind of action at all. The Pto has a Driveshaft that runs back to a Gear that is then Connected to a Larger Gear via a Chain, I can Turn the Driveshaft by a Wrench that in Turn drives the Gears connected to the Chain. Just Got the Motor in Truck Running Late Today & did'nt have a Lot of Time to Fool with it Today, Just wanted some Clue what Direction to Look at when i Get Back at It Tomorrow..............

Randy, The Pics would be Nice if not a Problem ...................

Thanks Again, Rick

Re: PTO Operation..............

I'm going to guess at this time that your cable is either broken, or mis adjusted. If you want to test the pto you can hand shift it with the engine turned off.

Re: PTO Operation..............

I wouldn't swear it isn't broken unless you have removed it from the shield and verified it. I have seen those things overlap inside the shield and half way work. Check the adjustment , if it just can't seem to be made right, that is when you will know it was a bad core. For pto's I love manual linkage! Cables are easy to install, and hold up pretty good. Manual linkage is harder to install, but once it is done it will be there forever!

Re: PTO Operation..............

I used the one on our '59n dump both in neutral, and in gear to raise the bed while driving ahead. It worked fine in 1st and 2nd, I wasn't tough enough to go higher.

Re: PTO Operation..............

Lawman your pto is mounted on the transfer case, hence trans in gear and tc in neutral for operation. Rick, check the adjustment of the cable...sometimes the one on my 1ton dump won't engage unless you let the clutch out a little to turn the trans gears to let the pto gear mesh into place. Could always lay under the truck with the motor off and grab the pto shaft and turn it by hand while trying to engage the pto with the other hand to see if it will go in, just a thought good luck with it, most of them are pretty tough unless run out of lube!!
