I know someone will correct me if i'm wrong. But from my understanding there is a connector on the choke that you connect to ignition power, so that power is running to it only with the key in the run position. some one please confirm this, as this will be my next upgrade after the new motor.

You need to run 12 v to the contact on the electric choke , I ran mine to the unfused vacent contact on the fuse box , make sure you only have 12v when the ignition key is turned on .I used 12 gauge wire and installed a 5 amp inline fuse just for protection .
FYI if you ordered a 1405 there is a difference in the Metering rods and jetting ,from the 1406 .

The 1406 is 2% leaner than the 1405. The 1406 is the electric chock model. The 1406 has .098 primary jets, .095 secondary jets and .075x47 metering rods. The 1405 has 100 primary jets and .095 secondary jets with .070x47 metering rods.

back to the topic... so that is all you have tyo do to hook up an electric carb is run a power wire to it from a source that has power when the key is in th on position? seems pretty easy.

That is all you need to do to make the electric choke work, the ground strap is only about 4" and it is usually already on the choke cover screws .If you are replacing a Q-jet with the Edelbrock you will need a adapter plate ( Spread bore to square bore ,about 19 bucks at Kragen ). You might need to move the throttle linkage bracket back about 1 "or 2 to get full throttle,Edelbrock sells a adapter , I made one out of some stock bought at Lowe's cost about 4 bucks and took 5 min to cut off 2" . The # of the Carb you have is stamped by the front left mounting bolt hole . the 1405 is more of a performance carb than the 1406 which will give you better milage .

I ran the hot wire on all of my electric choke carbs from the + side of the coil. Works well.

I'm not sure about the HEI. I like to run stock with a Pertronix pick-up.
Anyone know about the HEI?

Bob, I am only going off of the fact that the wire that I'm talking about on the HEI is a "switch on - hot" connection. That's why I feel like it would be Okay to use for this purpose.
However, as I've said before, I'm NOT an "electrical type", so I will defer to others for the definitive answer. Thanks, Jeff

Sounds the same as an external coil. Put a meter on it and if it is 12 volts when switched on with the key you are golden. Atleast with HEI you don't have to wory about determining if you have a 6 volt coil and conection. All HEI are 12. It doesn't work too well hitching up a 12 volt choke to a 6 volt sourse!
Let me know how it goes!

Bob, I haven't got a carb with an electric choke - yet. I'm still using the divorced choke Q-jet. Dinosaur tech LOL.
I have an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifold - new in the box. I'm just trying to decide if I want to try to put it on my current 350 and come up with a new square bore carb (and probably a hotter cam), or wait till I get my 406 built. Decicions, decisions. I know from some recent tests that I did that there IS 12 volts to the terminal on my HEI that I refered to. But I didn't know whether someone else may be aware of some unforeseen problem that hooking it up there would cause. Just looking for that "voice of experience". Thanks, Jeff

Thanks, Bill. I couldn't see any reason why not to do it, but...
Thanks again, Jeff
