Question Power Steering Noise

I realise that most if not all vehicles make some sort of noise with the steering on full lock, but my 71 Cheyenne screams, and the steering wheel shudders & judders...so the question is, is this a problem or fault that can be fixed? and if so what do I need to replace? or is it just it's age?????

Thanks.

Re: Power Steering Noise

check the pully and the tension of the belt verry closely, when the wheels are turned full lock, this is when the greatest demand is placed on the pump.If the belt isnt tight enough or there is alot of crap in the grooves in the pully the belt will slip and begin to squeel and the powerstreering can feel eratic at the wheel. If you are unsure about proper belt tension, general rule of thumb is no more than 1/2" deflection or you can pick up a belt tension checking tool at an autoparts store.

Re: Power Steering Noise

Also check the wear on the belt itself. Many people(pro's included) do not understand the V belt. The sides of the V are the area where the belt grips.I don't know how many times I've been told,"The belts good." Only to find the bottom flat keeping the V from gripping.
