This set up would be PERFECT for some wide whitewall tires too!!!

I like it

If not I vote for the rallys in blue!

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

Ok well here is a pic of what started it all. It is John Fabris's 67 and what I based my build on for teh most part.

I do have the thin trim rings on the truck now but since they are so dirty they did not show up all that well.

I know the silver grey is what you expect to see on these ralleys but I am kind of leaning that way since I do want a stock looking truck and I think the body color would stand out too much. Right now their really is not any one item that stands out that you would pick out at first glance. But only you see one then the rest start showing up as well. I think the later centers might add to that not at first glance look. What year are they and can you get them new?

If the truck was a bit lower then this would be a great look but I think it is a bit small on the side wall for the curent needs.

They were 88~98 parts. Should be easy to find on e-bay or @ most hubcap places.

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

I'd saty with silver. I painted mine argent from Eastwood when I put the new BFGs on my '69 C/10. I have the centers back on there, but I don't have pics yet.

I have the same 8" rallys on my Z71 and I painted them black to match the truck.

P.S. I think white would look like a bucket of butt, but that's just MY opinion!

I dont' think you could have picked a finer example to pattern yours from than John Fabris'. There's just something about his truck that draws me to it. I don't think it is the year model but more the color choice, trim and stance.

I'd say gray, from a distance it looks like it matches the paint.

It will make people want to get closer to your truck to check it out, not like that's going to be an issue to begin with.

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

Kevin would you like a current picture of one of my ralleys cleaned up with the center cap on?? it wouldnt be any problem to do that to maybe help you visualize what these later model centercaps look like on the old style wheels. I got lots of compliments on mine. Most tire/wheel shops do have the standard conversion lug nuts for the use of the later model center caps on the older wheels. I did it the harder way but before the lugnuts were available by swapping all the studs to metric so stock 88-98 lug nuts could be used. They did have black center caps too as well as the more common chrome ones.

powder coat them a darker gray, so you won't see any brake dust.

that is a very tastefully modded clean truck. I like he restro look by using a while paint or factory paint colors and trim moldings with late model engine/tranny combos and suspension and drivelines and ac for more modern driving machine. '

I plan on a white roof so far, with a metallic pea green or some sort of lite green metallic for a paint scheme. I am on th fence about using factory chrome trim because its all filled in and shaved on my frt 68 grille assembly along with the hood, side for the truck and tailgate will be also. I am tempting body colored factory bumpers also for a clean no frills appearnce with the blings being the rim/tires and stance job.

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

What makes John's wheels look so good with his truck is the color. It's subtle enough and not too bright that it works well and not too catchy, yet it compliments the truck. The metallic may have something to do with it also. John's truck is one of the few trucks out there that really looks amazing with matching rallies. It doesn't work with all trucks though.

I think the brighter blue on Kevin's truck would be too bright on rallies and would stand out too much. A darker gray would always make the wheels look dirty and wouldn't help the truck. Black wheels just simply wouldn't compliment anything on the truck at all. A nice shade of silver like argent would compliment the color on Kevin's truck. It would also do what he wants. It would help people see the subtle mods done to the truck instead of just notice the wheels. I beleive painting the wheels body clor on this truck would be almost as bad as a set of 24" spinners. The wheels would draw more attention than the truck itself.

This is simply my opinion, but it's based on what I've experienced at car shows when I've seen similar stuff done and the way I felt about them.

Here are 2 pictures, not the best,or the cleanest but when they wore fresh paint and the caps were new they were very clean with a nice retro kind of look in my opinion.

So if I understood you right I should send back the 24" spinners when they get here? Thanks for your input, it was very well said and I agree they will be going a silver/argent powdercoat with my thin rings and a set of center caps. I need to see what I can find in new caps then I will decide if I want the newer style (they would add to the subtle canges) or the same style I have now but good looking ones.

Looks good, so how are the caps held on? Do the black caps screw onto the converted lugs?

Yeah the actual lug nuts have the internal threads for the stud and have external threads for the black screw on caps. I had black centercaps off a GMC at first and thought they looked good until I put a chrome one on and compared. Then I sought after a full set of chromes. These are on 8" wheels with the deep beauty rings so thinner rings and a narrower front wheel may make the look a little different.

I like the looks of the newer caps. Just use chrome acorn style lugnuts & screw the caps on from the back. No need to get the fancy double threaded lugs...

Kevin

they re not from 67-72 years, but I ran the 8" truck ralleys on my 96, with the original GMC center caps. The trim rings were off an F150 (hey, it's what I had) they shape is a bit smoother than the factory GM trim rings.

I tend to like the darker hues with painted rims and lighter colors with the silver rim setup. But I thing I prefer the later model center caps.

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

I have also heard that there are bosses on the backs of the newer caps to were you can drill and tap them and run bolts to mount the caps from the rear and then use chrome lug nuts to make them look even different still. I have a set of centers around here somewhere if you want me to look for them I have the lug buts too. But when I bought them I was told that the factory lug nuts that match the centers are a metric size and you need to change your studs to use them. Not sure, just what I was told.

Re: Help me pic a rim color for LOW BUCK!

I have mentioned before that there is a standard lug nut made for this application readily available. It is the same nut as the 88-98 trucks but internal threads are standard. I had looked into using the centercaps with normal lug nuts but the holes for the black caps are rather large and dont like right to me with normal Chrome cap lug nuts.
