'71 air cleaner question HELP!!

I am in the process of replacing the thermal switch inside the air cleaner housing, the and vacuum control in the snout. I stripped the old parts out before taking pics. Does anyone have a couple reference pics of the vacuum hoses and the position of the thermal switch? Seems like I read an article some time back about those switches having to be installed a certain way. Also, If that's the case, how does the vacuum hoses run? Which one goes to the carb and which one goes to the vacuum control in the snout?

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

It's a little after 5 this morning and the shop lights are too cold to come on yet (I hate it when I can't sleep) - I'll take some pics in a bit... I believe one side or the other from the AT switch goes to the actuator on the snout and the other one went to..... vacuum on the carb I do believe.... Not sure if it matters which side of the AT switch, it just opens/closes when it hits temp.

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

UGH - the aircleaner I have is missing the AT sensor - In my manual, it shows the sensor near the snorkle with the "pointier" end aimed at the snorkle. Mine however (72 250) was located across from the snorkle... sooo, that 'ought to help about.... zero. TTT for ya though.

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

Luvlegs, thanks for, well, nothing!! LOL!!

cruiserman, I purchased the sensor, the small piece that the two vacuum hoses connect to, from NAPA. I also purchased the vacuum piece that sits on top the snorkel from NAPA. I believe that part is called a vacuum door motor, or a vacuum motor.

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

Yes, part numbers would be nice, but I'll try NAPA tomorrow. I was told by the dealer they are no longer stocked. I'm used to buying Land Cruiser parts, and if Toyota doesn't have it, it doesn't exist. I forgot that GM sells nothing for older vehicles.

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

cruiserman, I have bought several pieces for my '71 from GM recently. There's alot that has been discontinued, but if you have the old part numbers sometimes they can get it.
Try these NAPA #'s. Not sure if they are the ones for these parts, but out of all my receipts, I believe I have narrowed it down to these.
2-2202 sensor -(inside the air cleaner housing-the 2 vacuum hoses connect to this piece)

22259 - motor- sits on top of the snorkle

Good luck!

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

Luvlegs, I noticed last night that someone had a 6 cyl. air cleaner for sale on the board and had posted the pics...just what I needed! Did you get that air cleaner set up completed that you were working on several weeks ago?

I didn't have the hose on from the carb riser to the valve cover but you can get an idea... (seems like everything I add on is black.... )

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

Luvlegs, I found the correct size PCV hose at the Caterpillar dealer where I work. I have the Cat p/n if you are interested. I believe it's made by Gates, and it is PCV hose. If you are interested and can't get it locally, let me know. I paid about $6.00 for mine. Do you have a Gregory Poole Cat dealer near you?

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

I found a piece of hose in my shop - I think I picked it up when I cleaned out a maintenance shop in a mill that was closing.... I think it's just heater hose - it works and looks good though. Are you looking for an offset aircleaner or the regular kind?

Re: '71 air cleaner question HELP!!

I have the offset air cleaner setup, just have not had time to install it...not that I need it right now. The truck is several months away from being ready for the road.
