center caps: yay or nay?

I decided to paint my rally wheels black and im tryin to decide if I wanna do some of the little push through style center caps or no center caps. And no I do not wanna do the stock style caps cause I hate how they look with black.

Re: center caps: yay or nay?

good luck getting a set of push through caps to fit between the wheel and the flange on the end of the axleshaft. which stock caps do you have? i've seen several people put the 88+ rally caps on and they look good.

Re: center caps: yay or nay?

my buddy painted the part of the axel that you see chrome with that silver chrome paint and it dont look so bad lol you need one more chrome lug nut
when you use the stock ones it looks like a cop car with the black rims
if you can find something to fit it tho it wont look bad

Re: center caps: yay or nay?

Never mind , I didnt see the pic of the 6 lug wheels . I read the post but with dial up , I never saw the pic until I posted . This conversion should be tried by someone with a 2 wheel drive .

You can always paint the silver portion of the factory rally cap black and the only thing that will be chrome is theround center . Another option I havent seen anyone runiing is the centercaps from early 90's Chevy Astro Vans . Of course you would have to buy the conversion lug nuts that are 1/2 x 20 thread but with the threads on the outer part to screw the black lug covers on . The centercaps are real neat and would be a great alternative to factory if you do not like the factory caps . If you were lucky enough to find a set at the salvage yard , the Astro vans were 5 on 5 inch pattern and had 1/2 x 20- studs so the factory lugs will work on our trucks . I have always wanted to try this on one of my trucks but never have . Frank

Re: center caps: yay or nay?

I think in the 70's the center caps were painted black instead of argent.
So they were black around the base, then chrome farther up the cap. Instead of argent then chrome.
I am not sure if they were all like that or just certain models.
I have a set of caps I bought a few years ago that were like that. I ended up repainting them then never using them.

I can dig them out tomorrow and get a picture if you'd like?
Oh, I just remembered why I never used them; they used a smaller bolt to mount them than on the later model caps. The holes were smaller and would require a rim that had smaller holes in them to match.
I never had those rims?

Re: center caps: yay or nay?

If you like the way the push through type look, you could paint just the base of the caps black to match your wheels, like this...

I did this on my 87 too.
