Transgo Shift Kit
I heard shift kits are a must in an auto trans. I was wondering which one of the two transgo kits I should get for my Th 400. I got a 427 under the hood and 3.08 gears. I am wondering what the main difference is on the two different kits they offer? Also, how exactly do they work and is Transgo for sure the best way to go? I have heard about B&M as well. I am not concerned with comfort just performance.

I had a Transgo kit in my TH350. Not sure which one it was. Plenty of snatch between shifts. I loved it.

My first rebuild was on a TH400 and the guy that rebuilt it swore by Transgo. According to him, much better than B&M. I don't know, but I had like a stage 1 in it and I liked it!

i beleive transgo is the same shift kit that Gearstar performance uses too. They are known for building high quality automatic trannys.

Transgo is the best, be weary of "transco" not the same company or products. There are those who don't believe in shift kits, do your research, I believe Vettevet has some articles on 700r4's and one on shift kits that applies to all autotrans. The main point is that in an auto trans to complete a shift, a clutch pack or band must release "before" another engages, the problem with a shift kit is that sometimes for a micro second during this process both are engaged effectivly causing a transbrake for a slight second. That said reliefs in the seperator plate to allow faster disengagement of a friction surface is never a bad thing, theres a difference in a fast firm shift, and a crash shift. Not trying to say anything bad about shift kits, but its not exactly a fool proof deal, like many things they should be taken with a grain of salt.

So educate me...Transgo will give you a firm shift but not a "snap your neck" type shift? I remember a shssift kit on a car that I use to own and it would "jerk" you neck when changing gears...which I did not like. Maybe an old age thing?? On a 400 auto.---what would the advantages for using the Transgo? Thanks in advance.

Shift kits consist of nothing more than intermediate plates & gaskets.
Not much in the way of rocket science. When you install the kit they will give you a couple of choices regarding what check balls to leave out and what place to drill the holes in the intermediate plates. This determines how hard your shifts will be. If you buy a level 3 kit it will give you an additional intermediate plate and you will take out almost all of the check balls and they might give you an adjustable pressure regulator to adjust shift timing. B&M, Transgo, Fairbanks, TCI, Hughes all make good kits

I have used Transgo and never had a problem with it. I have also used B&M kits too. Just go with your gut feeling.
