worse than i had hoped

cleaned out my new truck, finally got the door open and the rust is way worse than i thought. after 16 gallons of trash out of my shop vac, i got to the floor and its fu(&ed up! big holes in the floor. im not quiet sure when its too far gone to bring back. im gonna build the frame and suspension and go from there.

Re: worse than i had hoped

If your foot doesn't fit through the hole---it's barely broken in. Almost ever truck will need outer rockers, a couple of supports and possibly rear cab corners---that's normal almost everywhere within US. If the inner roof above the visors is solid, and the firewall is solid---you are OK.

Re: worse than i had hoped

My advice is to start with a better base truck. I restored a 70 Cougar. Bought one in bad shape and started on it. I ended up buying a slightly better base and used the one I started with as a part car.

Re: worse than i had hoped

you're right, that looks BAAAAADDDDD. I would never think about fixing one that bad---but---i'm in california and every wrecking yard has at least one cab with much less rust than that. personally, i'd look for a better cab while you're doing the frame/suspension/ motor/etc.
i know, you guys back east will "string me up" for saying that.

Re: worse than i had hoped

If you are attached to the truck....and the kick area, roof and upper window area is solid...... floor, rocker and cab corner it and move on.

If the cab supports, and window areas are bad...along with the pictured rust.....MOVE ON!!!

Re: worse than i had hoped

Doesn't look all that bad to me - of course I do live in the northeast & have seen alot worse.

If your not going to use that motor - I could use that canister in the block as well as the vent on the back of the block.

Let me know,
Thanks - Andy

Man, I'd like to know where those trucks are! I'm in Carlsbad and you can't find anything out here that our friends down south haven't already taken home to rebuild! My drip rail rust is sooooo bad, the trucks going to be a convertable soon.... and not by choice. I need to find a good roof cut off a wrecked 69-72 and it would be easier to just weld it onto the pillars than to try to repair what I've got!

Re: worse than i had hoped

that is all part of doing a restoration, we have all fixed one that bad once, so we get smart enough to say "i'll never do that again" but it seems like i have

A weld here, a new body panel there, and she'll look brand new...

It's basically an early PCV valve. The Pre'68 motors had them - they were vented through the oil fill in the front of the intake and vented through the back of the block.

I have an old 283 block, and I'm missing those peices

As far as the truck pictures above. Once you fix 1 like that, you'll know what to look for in the future - so you'll have to do less work.

Re: worse than i had hoped

That's minor rust around here, pickup replacement floor pans and you're set.

Re: worse than i had hoped

Redneck,
hit the pick-n-pull in stockton, last time i was there i saw 3 or 4 cabs that weren't near as bad as that one. one was super nice with rustfree doors that didn't have speaker holes either. delta wrecking across the freeway from pick-n-pull has several useable cabs too.

Re: worse than i had hoped

Hey Jerry,
Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately I'm wayyyyy down here next to the border (Mexico) and you're wayyyy up there by Frisco! That's why you can still get the parts. They're not getting dragged over to TJ to rebuild a truck.
If I have to roadtrip to NoCal though, I know where to look.

Thanks again,
Dave

I have got 2 cabs that are in pretty good shape with current tags on one and a non op on the other with matching longbed frames and can't hardly give them away.
