72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

NOT MINE!
I saw this on Ebay and asked the seller for a photo of the SPID. He e-mailed right back and the truck is a real SWB (model #15734 = 114" WB), Big-block, A/T, A/C, AM-FM, posi, leaf-spring, black truck). I would love to see someone on the board end up with truck. Here is the link.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

Jerry,

I am not a GMC expert by any means but the Model # for a LWB is 15934 and the model # for the SWB is 15734. The 000 in the wheel base may be a GMC "thing".

I offered the guy $10k for it and that seems to be close to what it takes to buy it. If that was a Cheyenne I would pay significantly more.

as far as that spid sheet is concerned anybody with access to a typewriter can pop one out like that in less than 10minutes

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

The SPID is much more difficult to fake than you believe/claim. Anything that has been through a typewriter looks ridiculously fake. There is however at least 1 person doing a laser printed label that is incredibly good. I'm sure if you had 1 type-set label mixed in with 99 legitimate labels, most people on the board would find it immediately.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

I agree that there are some questions that pop into mind about the truck especially if I were considering its purchase. 1) Why the 67 box on the 72 body? (absence of marker lights) 2) What is up with the Grande glove box door and the plain bezel- can't have one without the other in woodgrain. 3) Claims factory tach but no mention of it on the SPID unless I missed it, the Gage option is a seperate option from tach and visa versa. 4) the 15734 threw me off but this must be a GMC thing 5) what is up with the shifter and turn signal knobs- they look to be van or at least later model pieces. Does he offer close up pics of the motor? If it is really a BB truck it will have the heat shield on the passenger side floor board @ the toe panel and generally the pressure hose on the power steering pump is a give away as well, it should be a long metal tube held in place by a coated clamp located on the front motor mount bolt that goes through the frame. I would also want to see the auto linkage and brake booster tube (72 used a different tube -It has a funky bend up at the end where it goes to the hose and check valve). All of which are little detail things that most people over look or don't know about if they "build" a truck.

just noticed that the AM/FM is gone too. wonder if he still has it--or ever had it. glove box door might not belong to this particular truck.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

Gary Terry, aka:CheyenneSuperman, told me years ago while selling a blank VIN-spec sheet that all you need is IBM type print to reproduce these.
I`m sure the glove box door applique was added, regaurdless, because it`s not a SierraGrande by any definition. But,being a Sierra (by the SPID) it should have woodgrain door panels.Leaf suspension wasn`t an option on GMCs,it was standard.WB 000.0,huh?What happened to the Sierra quarter badges when they replaced the bed with a`67?Seems to be assembled to me.Pretty good shape for unrestored???I don`t know...

Hmmmm...I was thinking about going to Eastern, WA this week. Eatonville is right on the way...LOL! It is the dry side of the state, which is a good thing! It is a bit high for this part of the country as well...especially with the questions.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

I spoke with the current owner and he was the one that added the glovebox cover. Also leaf springs were available as an option for both Chevrolet and GMC 1/2 ton trucks. The AM/FM was missing when the current owner bought it (he said he installed an AM/FM cassette that did not require altering the holes). The owner also told me he thought the engine was not original (had not verified the code (didn't know where it was until I told him). The Sierra and Sierra Grande's I have seen all had Cheyenne or Cheyenne Super on the SPID rather the Sierra and Sierra Grande (Z84 Option). This truck would be equivalent to a Cheyenne (no door/glovebox/guage woodgrain). The tach was obviously an add-on at some point. I did not notice the lack of side marker lights, therefore I did not ask him about it. I am convinced this is a legitimate Big-Block SWB well optioned truck. I did ask him about the heat shield (he did not know but I told him he may be asked for a photo of it). If someone was good enough to fake this, they would have made a Chevrolet Cheyenne Super. I hope someone convinces him it is fake and I can buy it for the $10k I made earlier today.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

Just for claification, the cheyenne had wood grained door panels but not the instrument cluster or gove box door. Cheyenne Super option is YE9 not Z84 (Cheyenne) however GMC did list Sierra Grande sometimes with the Z84 optin instead of YE9. I would have to see lots of pics to support the claims made about originality, but the truck looks solid and would be a great driver especially @ $10,000 if everything is fresh or low miles. I hope you are able to get it at that price. I would drive it. Maybe if you can nit pic it nicely he will drop- or you could show up with cash (lots of $100's and a big stack of $20's to make him see ALL that money and get the truck for a nice price. Good luck.

Re: 72 SWB BB GMC on Ebay

Dan,leaf springs were standard on GMCs and an option on Chevys.Coils were standard on Chevys and an option on GMCs.So,what I`m saying is the leaf springs shouldn`t be listed as an option. Not that they wouldn`t have been on there.Kinda like,if a guy did fab up that SPID he was probably going by "Chevy" knowledge not knowing the differences in GMCs,like most people.
It`s not uncommon to find a GMC Sierra with Cheyenne listed on the SPID.Same with SierraGrandes listed as CheyenneSupers.Blazers and Jimmys can have Cheyenne Listed instead of CST,too.I had a`71 Cheyenne that had CustomSportTruck listed.
`72 Sierras and Cheyennes do all have woodgrain inserts. And,most GMCs show the Sierra or SierraGrande on the SPID.
I wouldn`t go by the assumption that if it was pieced together it would have been done as a CheyenneSuper.I know plenty of guys, especially collectors, that would much rather have a high optioned big block GMC than a Chevy, including me.Besides,I`m sure the serial# is correct and it`s a GMC serial#.
I think it`s a real nice truck, worth the money, and I`d love to have it.I think the guy bought it the way it is and didn`t know any better himself,if it is pieced together.I think he`s an honest seller.I like piecing together trucks the way I`d like them to have come from the factory.Even use stuff from other years or cars.I always called it "hybridding".I like that GM feeling, even if it was never built that way y GM.This truck definately has that vibe.

The mystery continues...I agree this is a very nice looking truck. Question...Even if its not a numbers matching truck...how much would it cost to get a bare bones truck up to the level of this one?

Tim I hate to disagree with you but the GMC will list Leaf springs as an option. My 71 GMC Custom has them listed on the SPID sheet. It may have been one of those factory to factory listings I do not know but mine was made in St.Louis and they are listed.

It would cost quite a bit. Although, adding AC and power accessories to a work truck probably wouldn't cost more than a a grand to 1500 using salvage yard accessories -- a big block conversion is another grand or two - who knows. All of this could have been done back in the 80's before parts for these started getting spendy too.

The missing side marker lights on the bed are a big hickey though. Maybe a '67 bed from a previous collision repair long ago
