Loose column shifter, th400 trans

My column shifter is too loose. When shifting from 1 to 2 it goes to drive. Seems like detent is worn out. I dont want to install a floor shifter. I am trying to keep my truck looking stock. Is it possible to make it tighter? Thanks

There's a little rubber piece on the end of the shifter - pull the shifter out and make sure that's even there. My '70 was real sloppy until I realized I didn't have the rubber piece; I put one in and now it shifts fine.
