What tool, either GM or aftermarket, is used to 'hold' the proportioning valve open while bleeding the brakes? I've never seen one, let alone how to use it. I don't know if this is a critical step or not. Thanks.

If it pushs in ,take a piece of duct tape and tape it open--must be done to bleed brakes.

I'm no expert, but I've never touched the proportioning when I've bleeding brakes, Just bleed them. I did here of a cool do it yourself bleeding valve, seen it on two guys garage. It's a valve you put in place of you bleeder screw, it has a little ball and spring in it, just turn it open, and go pump the pedal, every time you back off on pedal pressure the ball seats so no air goes back in. When your done just tighten it up wala

I have never touched the proportioning valve, when bleeding brakes. I have installed Speed bleeders on all my brakes. You crack them open 1/4 to 1/2 turn, pump the brakes then close them back up. The built in check valve keeps air from getting back in. You may want to run a hose from the bleeder to a catch can. A set of 4 cost around $30 bucks.
