A Couple Hours' in the Driveway.....yeah right!

Let's see- two serp. belts, two alternators, a new radiator, 3-1/2 days, 4 skinned knuckles, multiple trips to Napa and countless colorful adjectives spoken out of frustration and contempt, I finally got the serpentine accessory drive setup on my '67!




Part of the issue was that I did not remove the brackets and whatnot from the donor vehicle (89 S10 w/ 4.3) so all the fasteners were missing....but for $15 bucks including the Alt., W/P, A/C Compressor and all pulley's- I figured I could spend some time rounding up the various nuts, bolts, and studs. I also did not plan ahead and score the SI to CS type alternator conversion harness, until I was a$$ deep into the swap. Furthermore, I did not plan on my screwdriver slipping off the bottom hose clamp and putting a nice gouge in my radiator!
One note for those who are contemplating this project....the smog pump delete tensioner is hella-pricey! The only place I could find it was my local stealership.......for $67! The A/C delete was very reasonable from my local Napa @ 28 bucks. Also, if you do run w/o the AC and Smog pump- you will need a Gates Model # K060970 belt (21mm x 2480mm) which is about 4" shorter than the one used w/ AC and Smog pump (stock S10).
But now that it's on...I'm happier than a pig in s%*t!
One question though- does anybody know which upper radiator hose I need to get so it's routed in front of the alternator and connects to a straight t-stat housing?

Great job, sorry about the rad though. What serp setup did you get? My son used a 360 degree swivel thermostat housing that pointed slightly higher up. Not sure if he replaced the hose w/ a different one though.

Yeah, the setup I got came with the reverse rotation W/P as well as the corresponing fan!

The brackets and accessories, including water pump and fan came off a 1989 S10 Blazer 4wd with the 4.3 V6.
I will definately check out the swivel t-stat housings and see if that will alleviate the hose to alternator pulley clearance issues. IIRC they later model Chevy trucks have the upper hose routed in front of the alternator and above the fan. I'm just not sure what years' this was on.

Anything after 88 should be what you need. Most likely 90-92.

Get someone you know to pop their hood on their truck that has a later model vortex. Might be the one you can use??

Now you need a cover for your radiator..Why GM didn't make one for our trucks in the beginning huh?

I used the PS pump from the S10. My old '67 pump has a threaded fitting on the back that I had to take off and put on the new pump- in order to use my original hoses. (The S10 hoses won't fit with the older gearbox.) If you go this route- make sure to take the plunger and spring out of the old pump as well so that you get the correct line pressure.

brad, the serp belt takes less power to run, and with the preset belt tension given by the tensoner (as opposed to the tension put on by you with a long screwdriver when tightening the alt bolts) bearing lifespan in the alt/water pump/steering pump will last virtually forever.
Some thinks it looks better too, but I think the V belt set up is less cluttered looking myself.

NAPA can special order one- it's Eckland or Echler (I don't remember) Part # EC82. However, I couldn't wait the 7-10 days it would take to get it in, so I called an Auto Electric and Battery outfit in the closest full-service town (about 35 miles away) and they had one on the shelf. It's made by PICO and the part number is- 5327C

Here's a little "rule of thumb" I use when figuring out how long I have to work on something.
I look at the project and mentally figure out in my head how long it will take. Then I double the number and go to the next larger time period.
For example: I look at a job and figure "15 minutes."
Going by my above calculator, I double the number to 30, and go to the next larger time period, hour.

And voila, 30 hours.
If things go really well, I can get it done in that time frame.

That's similar to what I expect nowdays with my fiasco...I mean project. I usually figure out how long a project should take then I multiply it by 10.

Dingfodgy,I would like to make your next mod somewhat easier and less expensive.Here is a tip on radiator hoses.Never use a screwdriver,use a nutdriver or 1/4 drive socket and ratchet.They don't seem to gouge radiators so badly.Don't ask how I knoww.

I picked up the brackets, alternator, water pump, a/c compressor, and ps pump off of C/L for $15 (yeah, I know I stole it...but I don't feel guilty for taking advantage of the hillbilly-tweeker I got it from). Being as I don't have A/C (yet) I needed to get the delete pully, which was $28 @ Napa. I also needed the lower idler that replaces the smog pump @ $67 from the stealership. 27 bucks for the belt, about 20 bucks in miscellaneous fasteners and 14 duckets for the alternator conversion plug and it all adds up to about....175 bucks or therebouts- which is hella cheaper than the 800 bucks they want @ GMPP. Mind you I effed up my radiator, but my buddy had a spare which he gave me. I also screwed up an alternator by trying to re-clock the plug position away from the valve cover (all three of the bolts holding the cases together snapped off). Fortunately, I had another one from an Astro van that works just fine.

If you could find the correct brackets you can eliminate the need for the smog delete.The drivers side part number is 10118701 and the passenger side is 10118751.I got mine at a local u pull it off a 94 chevy truck for 30.00 bucks and then adapted it to a big block but they will bolt right up to the small blocks.
