Re: HEI troubles.....

I'm going to get a dizzy and separate coil from Skip White, save my self a LOT of trouble and give it some more reliability, if my dad gives me the go-ahead

Re: HEI troubles.....

Got my dizzy and coil, what is the best way to install them and get them timed? can i just use one of those pointers that has the timing marks on it, use a piston stop to find TDC, and mark the balancer? What is the initial timing supposed to be? how do i adjust the advance? what am i supposed to do? I'm going to do it tomorrow by myself, my parents aren't around. Thanks for the help.

Grab a buddy.

Pull the #1 spark plug & put your finger in the spark plug hole. Have the aforementioned buddy "bump" the starter around until the compression blows your finger out of the hole. That will get you in the ballpark.
If you can, manually rotate the crank to TDC. If you can't don't sweat it.
Pop the dizzy cap & note the location of the rotor. It's not a bad idea to take a "marksalot" & put an index mark on the intake manifold, showing where the rotor was pointing. Also note, @ least mentally, the orientation of the dizzy with relationship to the manifold.
Pull the old dizzy. You'll notice that when it comes out that the rotor will rotate backwards a little bit. Keep a mental idea of how much it rotated.

Take your new dizzy and orient the body to the manifold. Rotate the rotor to about where it was WHEN THE OLD DIZZY CAME OUT OF THE MANIFOLD. That way when it drops in, it will rotate to the #1 position. (The reason the dizzy shaft rotates is because of the helical gears.
You may have to "stab" it several times to engage the oil pump drive.

Reading this makes it sound a WHOLE lot more complicated than it is; but it's really not all that difficult.

Start to finish, you should be able to swap out dizzies in about a 1/2 hour,or so.

If you have, or think you'll have, problems, PM me & I'll give you a cell # & walk you through it.
