Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
I ordered an adapter sleeve from Advance Adapters but it's incorrect. It's about an inch too short with no groove cut on the end. Can anybody give me info on what mine actually is and where to get it from?
I have a sm465 to np205 (10 spline). I ordered: (P/N 52-9504) Stock 10 Spline X 10 Spline NP205 Coupler Thanks

Re: Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
that's what you get these days when you order one. Mine was "too short" & didn't have the groove, and it works fine! the only thing that really matters, is the length of the splines.
Your new one should have (2) internal snap rings to help locate it between the tranny & X-fer. the old style, I think rested up against the tranny to keep it in position.

It didn't come with snap rings, however, it does have a solid wall in the middle, making it solid so you can't see through the center.
Would I just put it in place of the other? regardless of where the oil groove was?

Re: Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
I've dealt more with the Rockwell style adapter which doesn't hold gear oil. I thought the NP205 adapter was the same - dry.
Do the NP205 adapters actually hold any gear oil? Seems like the Rockwell has that grove cut in the end of it's sleeve but the couple 205 sleeves I have seen haven't had that cut. Is the 1" difference shared equally measured from the center stop inside the adapter?

Re: Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
I had a chance to look at it again last night. The inside wall of the extra inch is smooth (the spline grooves don't start until about an inch into the sleeve). So basically, if you were to cut that inch off, it would be the identical sleeve, other than the original doesn't have a center stop, just a gap.
It looks as if the oil groove was put there due to the extra inch of length on the sleeve. BTW, I was told I needed two oil seals for the adapter, however mine only has one. There is not one on the trans side, and the original overhaul manual says to put the sleeve in with the 'oil groove' side facing the tranny. So I'm thinking maybe some (Auto Trans?) ran with the adapter dry, and some wet. In addition, I spoke with Steve over at Advance Adapters and he said that he only makes one, which was the last production part number that GM used. He said he thinks they made a different one for some 71/72's. I emailed him a pic but no response as of yet. It doesn't look like there will be a problem using the new one I have. Yukon, should I grease up the outside of the sleeve when installed? Thanks

Re: Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
I doubt there is a need for grease as all the sleeve does to my knowledge is couple the two parts. There isn't forward or aft movement, just coupling.
To be sure, you might want to ask an admin to move this post over to the 4x4 subforum to get a more knowledgable response than mine though.

Re: Adapter sleeve identity .... ??
Thanks Yukon,
I was thinking the outside of the sleeve would hit the walls of the adapter, but I guess if everything is aligned correctly it won't. Thanks again for your input.. Darren
