This sucks!
so i just spent the last hour lining up my rear roll pan, and putting a couple tack welds on to hold it in place. then i go to remove the tailgate and find that it doesn't just slide out at an angle, but it has to be unbolted.
the problem with this is, the bottom bolt is now impossible to reach with a wrench or socket because the roll pan is in the way. wtf! anyways, I will now be removing the roll pan to get the gate off. When i do, i will also be notching the gate so it will slide off as i expected it to in the first place. but first i'm gonna eat some lunch |

Just something to consider.

Re: This sucks!
Sounds like you're having a great day from my perspective. You could have realized this problem after you finished welding it all up vs. just a few spot welds.

Re: This sucks!
heh, yeah, that would suck.
taking care of it wasn't to bad actually. i cut the spot welds on the D side and got the bolt out and gate out. I've already re-mounted the pan, and have now passed the point of removing it again, so cutting the gate is the only way to get it back on now. now i'm committed |

Re: This sucks!
Welcome to the world of modification. You stray from the General`s design and you need to be wary,dry-fit,figure,think,look at effects of the mod...then move ahead.Even then you can get a bite in the butt.Look at it this way. When you do this for the rest of your life you`ll know what to do.And,your aggrevation`s not in vain.Hopefully you`ve saved alot of others from going through the same hassle(heh heh?).I know,it`s still a bite in the rear. They don`t call it blood, sweat, and tears for nothin`huh?
Things like this will make you appreciate the final product all the better and give you something to talk about while chewin`the fat over your sweet ride.

Re: This sucks!
And to think everytime I install a roll pan I use the 73-87 gate mount its almost a direct bolt on then the gate will just come right off like the 80's truck, no chopping on the original stuff needed. Live and learn in the modified world.

Re: This sucks!
Mines the same way. I bought a bed with a roll pan welded in smooth and I cant get to the bottom bolts so i left them out and it works fine with 2

Re: This sucks!
So do the mod's work? I would enjoy not spending 15 minutes on one bolt twisting my fingers backwards when I remove my tailgate again.
