Looking to buy a 67-72

Hi, I'm usually on the 73-87 board, but I have been noticing a lot of 67-72's around my area for sale. I have always wanted one, but have never been sure what to look for. What should I keep my eye out for? Any rust notorious in certain areas? Rare options? And how can I tell the difference between years? I know that the 67's have no side markers, but what are the other differences? I just need some general tips and knowledge of what to look for when I end up looking to add one of these trucks to my collection.

Do some picture research on this site, also read through a lot of the posts about rust repair and problem areas. There is a wealth of knowledge to be had through this board. Enjoy yourself.

Well, it seems like a lot of them show rust whereever the door seals have failed i.e. the rockerpanels. Also the rain gutters leak causing hidden rust between panels in the visor area. All these things are repairable. Actually, there is a patch panel, for anything that has a hole in it, for these trucks. So, if it rusts it can be patched.

I was just telling my son that we're gonna have to pick up another truck for him. It's probably going to be a 1/2 ton so we can really trick out the suspension and the brakes on it. Cool thing about it is, we can get a truck that is for all apparent reasons, dead. Then we add the engine, tranny, suspension and brake package and we're off and running.

look for rusted rockers, look underneath for rusted cab corners, mounts and supports. Check the kick panels, and floorboards. Look at the rain gutter(not as easy of a repair) also look in the cowl, mine rotted out the cowl around the wiper motor(no patch panel for that) That about it for the bad rust spots. As far as mechanical, dont get strayed off by the I6s, built right they can be stout motors, and if I6 isn't your style v8 swaps bolt in. If you can find it power steering and power brakes are real nice to have(again not a deal breaker if they dont have them) The 67 and 68 have the slanted hood with lettering on them. If you see a 67 with a small window dont let the guy convince you its a rare option thats so valuable. In reality its a rare lack of a option(large back windows where a option back then) and really doesn't affect the price at all. A/c nice to have but you can get a after market kit for 1k to fix that if not. As with all trucks swb are the most wanted style, so if you want swb expect to pay for it. If you find one you like take some pics of it, open the glovebox and take a pic of the information sheet, and post it here for all to point stuff out for you to check. And remember there is no such thing as a 'rare corvette option v8'

He's in Cali, they do not rust there!! Rockers and kick panels are the most common out here anyways. the roof near the windshield is a possibility, but not too common in the west. floors near the kick panel. Good Luck!!

The 71-2 has disc brakes & stouter streering. They are the best trucks GM ever built. Mine drives as good as any new truck. I leave my car at home most of the time & drive the truck.

and 72's had plastic door pannels right? and 71's are metal?

The cool part is a 67-8 has the better looking clip (IMO) and the front end can be upgraded to 72 stuff with discs. the 69-70 look alike, and the 71-2 are similar. It's all in what you like. A nice 72 can be bought and a 67-8 clip put on it, so it is only limited by what you want and what you can pay for. These are super easy to work on and make excellent drivers.

Desert area of California is the best place to look. That is where I live and they are plentiful with no rust.

the rarity of the small window lies in the fact that of the 67-72 body styles, only the 67 could have a small window. It is however the big window option in 67 that would be rare, but no one can spot the difference in cab between a big window 67 and any other big window. What you can spot are the few small windows as they were a one year option (for this body).

Rust is the big threat, like everyone said..

options to look for - tranny upgrades, ac versus none, engine size, power steering, disc brakes...

After i bought mine (dont get me wrong, I love it) I realized a powerglide tranny wasn't going to be right for what I wanted to do, and its a pricey upgrade to swap a tranny for me... same deal on brake upgrades.. big $ to be spent there unless you are a good enough mechanic to make things fit and work on your own.

I used to have a 1978 and a 1980 and I can tell you that I am much happier with my recently purchased 1970. The 67-72's just seem like a real hot rod or collector truck than the 73-87's
I have had more people talk to me about my 1970 in just the couple weeks I have owned it already than I ever had with the 78 or 80 in the entire time of owning both.

I have 69 SWB Fleetside with lots of new stuff and no rust. Ijust finished putting it together this past month. It has 72 upgrades-sheetmetal, disc brakes, 350, .030 over with new cam, lifters, carburetor, LT-1 ported cast heads, hooker headers, new front end and related parts, rebuilt 700R O/D with Corvette servo and clutches, 2500 stall convertor, new bumper, grille, new Patriot Blue 2 stage paint, Boyd 17" wheels, Dunlop SP 5000 low profile tires, the gas tank has been relocated to the rear, new brake lines, 4 core radiator, serpentine belt and new recovered seat. All it needs is an A/C and the front end aligned.
I have way too much in the truck, but I need the room since we moved to a smaller place. I am asking $15,000. I tried to attach a picture but was not able. Can someone help?
