Towing?

Hey folks, I am pulling a small uhaul from VA to AL in a month. It is about a 1000 mile trip. It is a 72 c10 350/350 w/3.73. Anything I should know about towing with one of these before I go....besides driving slower thanks to the 3.73's.

I would say you should rent a truck and save the wear and tear on you own truck.

I hear short bed’s don’t tow as well as long beds…..but you didn’t say what you have.

I say use Rider or any other company, but what ever you do don’t use U-Haul! There are numerous problems with U-Haul and there stuff. (Problems w/uhaul)

Just use common sense, and service it well before you go. Watch the temperture, maybe even install a simple Mechanical aftermarket temp gauge to keep track of things. Give yourself extra room for braking also.

Yes a long bed would be more stable, but you should not have any issues at all if your truck is mechanically sound.

If you have coils in back, them make sure your bushings are good.
Now, admitedly, my old truck was worn the heck out, (500,000 mile old POS) but that thing couldn't tow to save it's life.
Now, if your truck is in nice shape, then by all means, load the sucker up, and hit the road. If 1000 miles would put measurable wear on your rig, then it's probably an old POS that shouldn't be towing (like my old one) but any decent truck, and most old POS's should have absolutly no problem with this kind of task.

What do you mean short beds can't tow. It all depends on how it's built. Mine tows this 4000 lb. boat all day long at 55 mph and more if I want to pass someone.

It is a long bed and seems to be in pretty good shape. The person that owned it before me drove it all the way from Utah, but that was about 4 years ago. I think to save my nerves I may just tow it. Thanks for all the input. You guys are awesome

Uhh . . ..... Dont forget the tires. Extended heat during long drives tends to kill tires w/any amount of dry-rot on the sidewalls.

I told my son in law some time back "no guts no glory," when he asked me if his 1984 Mazda four cylinder pickup with 180,000 miles would make it from tip of Oregon to Bryan, Tx. What he didn't say was that he was loading the bed with several 100 college books he had collected over the years being a college teacher.

The springs on the truck were bent straight. But he made it over deserts and mountains with no problems.

I agree with Longhorn Man, your truck ought to handle the towing unless you have other issues.... I say go for it! Have a safe trip and don't

Posted this pic in another thread today, but it fits here too. I only towed about 30 miles today and again tomorrow, and I've only driven the truck 400 continuous miles at one time(no trailer), but I would trust it for the trip you speak of. My other truck, not yet, maybe some day. I would get a nice box truck and a trailer for your truck if you don't know it real well. If anyone can answer the question your asking it should be you.

Shortbeds have the same capacity as longbeds.Actually,a bit more.They both have the same GVW and a longbed has a greater net weight.
