Steering column help needed
I am installing newer seats that put me too close to the wheel for my comfort. I am interested in installing a shorter tilt column. Not Interested in shortening a factory or van tilt. I have been looking at the ididit and flaming river columns and noticed the 3/4"DD and 1" DD. Supposedly the 1" is better and is more available, but it looks like ours are 3/4"? I'd really like a 28" if that will work, but 30" would be better than the 32" that I believe is stock. Any advice? Anyone do this? Any clearance issues to look out for with the dash? I tried the search, but i stink at it our it stinks because i never find what i'm looking for.

Re: Steering column help needed
I appreciate that, and have checked out the FAQ several times. but i want a tilt and a column for floor shifter and have an automatic non tilt right now so unless someone can show how to make an auto non-tilt into a manual tilt, i still need some help. Thanks!

Re: Steering column help needed
Any of the stock 69-72 columns use an intermediate shaft that attaches to the steering box. This shaft is fluted in that you can drill out the plastic pins and compress it ---once done, you can then move your steering column forward into the dash--really makes no difference between tilt or non tilt. Either will work. You can convert an automatic tilt to a floor shift tilt but you have to disassemble it and close the hole from the shift stalk. Don't believe replacement floor shift tilt parts are available for substitution. Huck

Re: Steering column help needed
Thanks for the info. Well, i am actually figuring on aftermarket as i see the paintable tilt columns with billet dress up kits for only 250 or so....much less than a used factory tilt and brand new versus a potentially loose used column. So I guess my question is about 28" or 30" aftermarket columns only.
