Question What side is the oil dipstick?

I know this sounds odd but what side of the motor should the dipstick be on if it is a 72? Don't worry I am not confused about how to check the oil but a couple of my friends said it was odd that my oil dipstick was on the passenger side for the early year model. I am just curious also. If it supposed to be on the driver side then this would confirm that this isn't the stock motor which I was almost sure of anyway. If anyone has any info I'd appreciate it a lot.

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

I believe all the dip sticks for our trucks are on the drivers side, for sbc engines. Others will post about it....

all sbc dipsticks were on the driver side until 84 (IIRC). you have a replacement engine.

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

Chevy II and nova engines had goofy oil pans and passenger side dipsticks.

I was thinking it was 74 or so when they went to the passenger side, but either way, 67 - 72 are supposed to be on the drivers side

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

IM not sure what year it is that changes either but I just finished a moter swap on a 84 K20 and the old moter was on the passengers side but the doner moter was on the drivers side and it was a hassle,I had to get diffrent exhaust manifolds because the ones on the 84 dumped right where the dipstick goes on the drivers side. I had to buy a oil pan gasket for a 78 to get one that had drivers side stick,79 did not. What color is the moter in your truck, that is a quick indicater of year.67-72 should be chevy orange.

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

IDK but on my zz4 block it says there is a port on both sides but the only one I've found is on the passenger side and lower than the standard ds one. Sucks cuz I bought the short billet dipstick before I figured it out.

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

either 79 or 80 they went to passenger side dipsticks, some mercruiser blocks had provisions for both sides of the block, and the mid 60's c60s with v8s had a plug on the drivers side and just had the dipstick in the pan opposed to going through the blocks, there are tons of variations

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

The motor is Chevy Orange. I talked to the previous owner and he thinks tha thte motor came out of a later model chevelle. Would that make since for the dipstick to be on the passenger side. Sorry for not replying sooner. I was admitted to the hospital yesterday.

Been there done that, except from the opposite perspective

The tubes are also different size diameter between the two sides also.

Re: What side is the oil dipstick?

My dipstick tube definitely doesn't seal well. Is there supposed to be an o ring on it or something?
