Questions From The New Guy.
Just an introduction and a couple of questions if ya' don't mind.
I'm Jimmy Mac. My main point of interest is HD choppers. But as long as I can weld, cut and grind I'm usually a campy hamper. I've got a '68 GMC 3/4 ton long bad, that cought on fire last summer, and that wasn't such a bad thing. It's forcing me to do some needed modifications. My plans are as follows. Replace the entire drive train w/ latem model trans with overdrive, big block, duel rearend/bed. This truck will be used for hauling a 5th wheel full of bikes and long trips to shows. On to the questions... #1) Has anyone here ever replaced their early model long bed and rearend w/ a late model Duel-wheel and late model bed? If so, how was the match-up? #2) There seems to be a billion aftermarket motors out there. Were looking for torque and long-haul reliability in a motor/trans/rearend. Suggestions? Thanks a truckload! Chopper mac, your a man after my own heart.I too built a 68 one ton duelly flatbed.If you stay with 85 or older running gear it will bolt right in.Some minor e-brake cable adjustments are about all you need.You can also use newer running gear but you will have to move the spring purches to match you truck.The late model stuff is too narrow. As far as a power plant I'm using a mild 454 chevy.About 450hp and 620ftlbs according to the dyno.I get about 10 to the gallon empty,about 8 loaded with hay.About the only way to get better mileage is to go injected or diesel.I hope this helps.

I almost forgot,I run a sm 465 four speed trans.Very tough and easy to find.Let me know if you need one. I also run the GM 14 bolt rearend,almost every 73-80 3/4 ton or bigger has one.Make sure you get the full floating axel rearend,That way if you break one,the wheel wont fall off,then again,I've never seen a 2 inch axel break
