1971 3/4 ton longhorn V-8/350

i just inherited my dads truck and want to find out about it. It's almost pristine shape, 64K original miles, kept in a garage its whole life, driven gently, probably not above 55 MPH for the last 10 years. I am driving it from idaho to new mexico in 2 weeks and would like advice as to how to run the engine to I don't hurt it. I need to "break it in" yes? Not 75 MPH on the freeway immediately out of the garage. Take oil, check it often etc. I'm getting all fluids changed, brakes checked, lights, etc. But how to drive it is the question now.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It doesn't seem that many 1971 longhorn fleetside 3/4 ton are out there.

Drive it normally (no hot-dogging) and remember it is HEAVIER than a Honda...allow plenty of room for the idiot in front of you to make a sudden stop (because you can't.)

Before you start your trip have Dad help you change the oil, check all fluids, do a safety check and full service. This will mean new air cleaner plugs etc. This will help introduce you to the truck properly. They have feelings and will greatly appreciate you starting off on the right foot. SERIOUSLY! Then drive it like you stole it...just don't abuse it...it is a classic!

I just go with a complete service; lube, oil and filter; a tune up; plugs, points, condenser, air and fuel filters. Maybe a set of plug wires.
It probably wouldn't hurt to have the transmission serviced if it's an automatic.
While you're at it, change the gear lube in the rear end.

Total cost would be a couple of hundred bucks, if you and your dad do it together.
Good maintenance is about the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Oh, I almost forgot, drain and flush the cooling system; new hoses and belts.
And check the brakes.

If this helps...I drove a `71 C/20 with a camper mounted from Maryland to the North Rim of the canyon and back.It had about 75,000 on it when I left.We went from here across 40,up through Las Vegas,NM to Taos,then up to Chama,Pagosa Springs,Mesa Verde,Page,Glen Canyon,North Rim,Flagstaff,Sedona.Petrified Forest,and back home...no problem.I ran it about 65-70 on the hiway just fine.I changed oil in Flagstaff.

another one thats often overlooked that i would recomend... repack the front wheel bearings! i at least check them a couple times a year on my daily drivers

I agree with everyone,, especially with checking the gear lube in the rear end.. (that one got me),, change the fan belts,, and keep the old ones.. take raditor fulid,and a another of water.take fuses. take rags,, lots of them,, check the FUEL lines.. change the filters including fuel.. take extra fluids, and the emergency contact number for this website.. and of course,, take your camera! good luck have fun

You will need to take out a bank loan or increase your credit limit on your Visa as well...gas is going to be a little pricy.
