need custom rear axles

I swapped my from 6 bolt drums to 5 bolt power discs in front, and now I need to change the rear 6 bolt to 5 bolt. Is the easiest way to accomplish this by getting new 5 bolt axles? I tried swapping them from my 84 gmc parts truck, but they were about 1/2" shorter I believe, and the spider didnt fit with my differential. Who makes custom axles? Have any of you ordered some? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: need custom rear axles

If Im getting new axles anyways, how much of a process would it be to get disks in the back too? Sorry Im not very experienced with mechanical issues like brakes. Could I order new axles, with 5 bolt disks all in one?

Thanks for the link. I think Ive found the axles I need: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
But Ill need to buy new 5 x 5" drum brake kits now, correct? (My front disks are 5x5) I think Ill stick with drums in the rear rather than disks. Ive looked on Summit's site for drum brake kits with the 5x5 pattern and cant seem to find any. I guess they dont have the axles and drum brake all in one package? Again, thank you for the link, it should help me out bigtime!

Early Classic sells the brake drums and you can also get the axles from them.

I checked out those axles you bought for your truck. Where did you buy the 5 lug drum brake kits for your axles? Or did you already have them? Or are they included with the axles, and just not shown?

Come to think of it... is there any outstanding reason I couldnt bring my axles to a machine shop and get them to redrill a 5 bolt pattern into them?

Re: need custom rear axles

I just paid $125 to have a pair of 6-lug axles redrilled to 5-lug, center lugs turned down, and new lugs installed. I went with Dutchman Motorsports here in town.

Re: need custom rear axles

Just put a ford 9 inch in it out of a 1978 mark 5. its two inches wider than the 6 lug axle and is already 5 on 5 and some were even rear disk. I have picked a few up in my town for $100 each.

I would assume that he is refering to the stub that centers the drum. Meaning that it would be a good idea to have the drums you intend to run before you have this done. That way the shop can be sure that they will fit.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant. A good shop should already know what size to turn the center down. You could also just bring a spare 5-lug rim. Also, be sure to have them install the 1/2" lugs and not the 7/16" lugs as used in the 6 lug setup.
