Road Trip Checklist
Anyone have a good pre-flight checklist for taking one of these rigs on an interstate marathon? I'm looking for suggestions like:
I have a pretty good idea of what to expect, but you can never be too prepared and I'm sure you guys will come up with something I missed. |

Re: Road Trip Checklist
I'd take a spare starter. Seems like some times they'll get hot on long trips and not want to work. I've had to fiddle with a few of them.
I've also changed pushrods/rockers on the side of the road. Maybe a spare thermostat too. Bring some towels, and gloves. Assortment of tools. Fluids Spare tire, jack, jackstands DMM or test light along with wire strippers/crimpers, fuses, connectors and wire. Never know when an electrical gremlin will pop up. Where ya going? Good luck! |

Re: Road Trip Checklist
How far are you going? I have an extra large plastic bin that I just start filling up until it is full.
Small floor jack 4 way lug wrench lug nut security adapter Plug-in air compressor Can of fix o flat An extra long plug wire fuses of various amperage black tape Gallon jug of anti-freeze (or something to hold water in) When's the last time you changed your wiper blades? And the one thing you never want to leave home with out: 100 mile an hour tape, . . . . . . . . aaahhh to heck with all of this, just get yourself a Triple A membership, .

I have a chunk of tubing and a few push connect to push connect fittings in case I have a blow out on my air suspension. That and my phone.

I like about a 6 foot chunk of 12 gauge wire with alligator clips on both ends, pocket knife, and electrical tape.

The biggest problem that I have with trucks/cars is NOT fixing things, that's easy...it's finding the problem that needs to be fixed!

Fuel pump, belts, hoses. Then again, for real fun...like Longhorn Man says...just go for it! Oh yeah...I like to have towing insurance for peace of mind!
Are you coming north or just going across town?

Re: Road Trip Checklist
Things to take.
A blanket to lay on under the truck. I have a old bed pillow top off a water bed I threw away. Gloves so on the road you don't have to wait for it to cool off. Something to drink and munch on also. It's a Chevy right? Tools are a gimmie anytime you are driving a Chevy or GMC!

Re: Road Trip Checklist
Among the standard stuff, I usually throw in an alternator and voltage regulator on one of these trucks. These are the only 2 things I've had fail on long trips besides a radiator leak that I epoxied. I have actually used a 1 volt reg and 2 alternators over the years on long trips in old trucks.

Re: Road Trip Checklist
Two smaller gas cans carry a whole lot better than one bigger can. Something about being balanced makes it easier on the back.
And don't forget a roll of toilet paper and a tow strap. |
