I started to remove the dash pad in my truck (well actually it just started falling apart) and I didn't realized there was a brace that helped hold it on the dash. When I buy a replacement pad do I still need the original brace or do the new pads mount differently? Where is the best place to buy a replacement dash pad?

You have to get under the dash and remove the nuts holding it to the dash.

The replacement dash pad will be complete and mount in these holes.

I would suggest you contact one of the vendors from this board on getting a good fitting dashpad. I have heard others having troubles with the fit.

There are dash pad covers available, and they fit very well, look very good, and are tougher than the original type. I put one on, and not one person has ever noticed anything different, that's how good the fit was.

Sounds like your old dash pad is in as bad of shape as my old one was. That bracket you speak of is actually molded into the dash pad. (or it was at one time!-LOL) Mine was the same way.

Dash pad prices have dropped it seems. I paid $105 plus tax when I bought mine but I've been hearing you can find them for $60. Doh! Shop around a bit.

GMC Paul's replacements are excellent. When you replace it, I suggest a full dash-ectomy. I did the dash bezel, defrost hoses, dual-speaker thing and glove box insert and dash pad all at the same time. Getting to those nuts that hold the pad down is a bugger. To make it easy on yourself, take out everything including the radio so you can reach them. Good luck. It will look great when you're done.

Good point on the overhaul, no better time to do it. I had already done everything under the dash, new harness, hoses, stereo, glovebox liner, etc., and my dash then developed a big split. That is why I went with the cover instead of the whole pad. But I really do like the cover.
