Not For The Faint Of Heart!!!
Well the saga of getting my Jimmy running before I go to Japan in July began back in February when I purchased a motor from a board member and shown here. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=268997
I then took it to the auto hobby shop on the base in Yuma and subsequently had several items stolen from the motor and chronicled here. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=287544 The thieves tried to take off the manifold (took the bolts out but couldn't break it loose) so I pulled the manifold and checked it for the "missing" bolts but didn't find them and reinstalled it. A couple weeks ago, we fired the motor and broke in the cam. It ran for 20 min and we shut it down. We restarted it, adjusted the timing and shut it down again and then it wouldn't start as told here. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=294953 I pulled the head today just to see what I could see and this is what I found.

So after replacing the parts that were stolen and now a new head, my $5k engine will have cost me $7k plus countless hours of my labor. But it may be running Tuesday so keep your fingers crossed for me.

No that's a bit of glue from the gasket hanging down. The only damage that I've been able to see is the imprint from the bolt on the top of the piston. Still trying to figure out how that bolt made it past the valve though. You can see that the valve is bent but other than that it didn't seem to damage anything.

Ok, that's at least some good news I guess. I saw a race engine once that had that happen with an air cleaner wingnut and and it busted the head (cast iron) , the piston and the cylinder. Still sucks that you had to go through all that!

After a second look and thinking about it a minute, did you actually hear the engine run? It doesn't look it it has ever fired. I've seen a few engines spin a bearing or whatever after one a few minutes and they usually have some blackness on the piston and combustion chamber in that short period of time.
BTW, I'm questioning what you are saying, just making sure someone isn't telling you the wrong thing.

I was the one who did the break in. It ran for 20+ min and then for another 5 or so. I wiped the top of the piston to get a better look at the damage.

Oh OK, I was just looking out for you, trying to make sure they were trying to get over on you. That cylinder probably never made any compression either so that may be part of it too.

Thanks for the offer. I assume you're a Marine. I've probably seen you around if ur active duty. I was the LCPO at BMC until yesterday. I'm good on the parts. I ordered a new head from Summit that should be here Tuesday. Other than that and gaskets, I don't think I'll need anything. (keeps fingers crossed) If you hear of anyone selling edelbrock parts though, you have my permission to put a bullet in their kneecap. Just kidding but it just burns me up that someone would steal and then do something like this to add insult to injury.

The piston and rod and crank all took a beating too. I'd be afraid to run that thing too hard personally

I'm sure your right but I just need to get this thing buttoned up before I put it in storage and it sits for 3 years. It will probably get completely torn down and redone when I come back from Japan.

In your other thread, Marv D was dead on about what was wrong just based on your description... I hate to think this, but there is an off chance that you may have flattened a lobe on your cam if the bolt prevented either valve (more likely the exhaust) from fully opening while it was still floating around in the cylinder, before it wedged into the spark plug hole.

Pretty sure you will need to replace that piston, I'll bet the ring land got compressed and there will be a stuck ring there. Like Longhornman said the rod could be bent or crank damaged too. That really sux - sorry for your bad luck.
